Plants root very well inside and it is perfect for modelling the ground design. Lava substrate is often used for the design to form a solid foundation for wood and stones. Les plantes s'y enracinent très bien et il est idéal pour modeler un sol. Le substrat volcanique est volontiers utilisé dans la décoration pour former une base stable sous les structures de racines ou de pierres. Le sable ou le gravier glisserait ou pourrait être creusé par les poissons. Les granulés du sol volcanique s'imbriquent bien les uns dans les autres et sont donc toujours utilisés comme sous-couche par les aquascapers.
