Ni Yulan worked for 18 years as a lawyer in politically sensitive cases, but concentrated her work in the last years mostly on people protesting the demolition of their homes because of the Olympic Games in 2008. After she had filmed the demolition of one of those homes, she was arrested and severely mistreated, on which occasion her feet and kneecaps were broken.

en haar echtgenoot Dong Jiqin opgepakt door de politie in Peking. Ni Yulan werkte 18 jaar als advocaat in politiek gevoelige zaken, maar zette zich de laatste jaren met name in voor mensen die hun huis kwijtraakten, onder meer vanwege de Olympische Spelen in 2008. Nadat ze de sloop van een huis had gefilmd werd ze opgepakt en zwaar mishandeld, waarbij haar knieën en voeten werden gebroken. Sindsdien zit ze in een rolstoel. Protest tegen die mishandeling leverde haar een jaar detentie op, en als gevolg van die strafvervolging raakte ze haar advocatenvergunning kwijt.

Het Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC, website) heeft de Speciaal Rapporteur voor de Onafhankelijkheid van Rechters en Advocaten, Gabriela Knaul, geïnformeerd over het bovenstaande. Daarop ontving het BHC een officiële waarschuwing van het Wit-Russische ministerie van Justitie voor het in diskrediet brengen van het justitiële apparaat. De waarschuwing zou er uiteindelijk toe kunnen leiden dat de organisatie, één van de weinige die nog erkend wordt door het ministerie, moet stoppen.

Het huis en kantoor van Sotoudeh waren in het weekend van 28 augustus 2010 doorzocht door veiligheidsdiensten. Daarbij werden dossiers, een pc en enkele persoonlijke bezittingen meegenomen. Naar aanleiding van deze doorzoekingen werd ze beschuldigd van “activiteiten tegen de nationale veiligheid” en “propaganda tegen het bewind van de Islamitische Republiek”. In verband met deze aanklachten moest ze zich binnen drie dagen bij de Evin gevangenis melden voor een ondervraging. Na de ondervraging is ze gearresteerd.

Au début du mois de décembre 2009, des individus habillés en civil essayèrent de pénétrer dans la maison de Molano. Le téléphone portable de l’avocat était depuis un certain temps sur écoute (on soupçonne les services de la sécurité intérieure). Son bureau était aussi surveillé par plusieurs personnes, sa femme filée et menacée par Internet. Une des menaces disait : « Nous tenons à vous faire savoir que si jamais il arrive quelque chose à l’un de nous ou aux membres de nos familles, nous en rendrons responsables le juge et son assistant, l’avocat Jorge Molano ; que notre sang coule sur leurs têtes ! »

In mei 2010 heeft L4L met Alba Cruz gesproken. Zij gaf toen aan dat de bedreigingen haar het werk ernstig bemoeilijken. L4L heeft vervolgens een eerste schrijfactie georganiseerd om bekendheid te geven aan de situatie van Alba Cruz. Helaas ontvingen wij nu berichten dat Alba opnieuw is bedreigd in een sms-bericht. Ook deze bedreiging is erop gericht om haar werkzaamheden voor slachtoffers van mensen-rechtenschendingen in Oaxaca te bemoeilijken.

Deze gaf aan dat hij haar familie zou weten te vinden als zij door ging met haar werkzaamheden. “De enige reden dat ik je niet nu vermoord” zei hij “is dat er bijna verkiezingen zijn en ik geen schandaal wil. Jouw zaak is internationaal bekend.”

Het lijkt alsof deze boodschap is achtergelaten door een voormalig lid van het nationale leger. De levenspartner van de advocaat wordt de afgelopen maanden herhaaldelijk achtervolgd.
