The composer asked that Don Quixote be sung “with a sense of nobility and dignity which partakes equally of the sublime and the ridiculous.” Master Peter should strive for clarity and vivacity. Both he and The Boy should avoid all lyrical feeling, and the latter should also sound like a boy shouting in the street. Hence, the combined styles range from knightly dignity to peasant roughness, from refined lyricism to folk idioms. Several traditional Spanish songs are incorporated as well (Melisendra’s melancholy theme, the march theme to which the Moor is flogged, Don Quixote’s address in the finale).
