The chemism of the original magma: magmas that are rich in silicates, so-called acid magmas, contain more highly volatile gases than basaltic magmas like sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and water vapour. This chemism depends on the plate tectonic situation. Acid magmas are formed over the subduction zones of ocean plates, e.g. over the circum-Pacific "ring of fire" with the Andes and the North American Cordilleras in the east and the island arcs of Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia in the west. The high fluid content of these magmas makes them highly explosive and their eruption columns extend much further into the atmosphere than in the case of basaltic volcanoes like Etna or Kilauea. The very rare flat basaltic eruptions are an exception. Compared with the sulphur fraction, other gases generally have much less impact on the climate.

Environ un mm de tourbe naît ainsi chaque année. « Comme les marais sont plutôt pauvres en éléments nutritifs, on y trouve plusieurs espèces de végétaux qui privilégient les milieux acides. Il s’y développe essentiellement des sphaignes, des plantes herbacées, des arbustes et parfois aussi des arbres », explique le biologiste responsable de la protection des marais au niveau national. Les tourbières forment un écosystème unique, lieu de vie d’espèces que l’on ne rencontre nulle part ailleurs. En Suisse, environ 600 espèces animales et végétales sont considérées comme spécialistes des marais. Un grand nombre d’entre elles sont menacées.

There is increased interest ion the development of processes that convert methanol selectively to the targeted products. These can be hydrocarbons, olefins and gasoline range molecules. Another interesting process is the synthesis of oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEs) from methanol and formaldehyde precursors. OMEs have shown great potential for the use as diesel fuel additives, but challenges for the catalytic process to produce targeted OMEs with the right chain-lengths remain. Most commonly, solid acid catalysts like zeolites are employed for these processes. Our group is developing approaches towards the computational design of zeolite catalysts. These approaches are based on higher level theory calculations on cluster models that can serve as benchmarks as well as periodic DFT calculations mimicking the zeolite pores. Our aim is to understand the reactions in detail with the ultimate goal of using this understanding to make predictions of new advanced catalysts based on theoretical calculations.
