Vandaag de dag verkoopt het CD-ROMs met broncode, CD-ROMs met binaire bestanden, mooi gedrukte handleidingen (allemaal met de vrijheden om verder te distribueren en aan te passen), en Luxe Distributies (waar we de hele softwarecollectie op maat maken voor het door u gekozen platform). De FSF verkoopt nog steeds handleidingen en aanverwante artikelen, maar het meeste komt van bijdragen uit de lidmaatschap. Je kunt lid worden van de FSF bij fsf.org.

Històricament hi ha hagut uns beneficis per invertir en mines i estic segura que si es fes el mateix per la biotec, seríem igual de forts que som en el sector miner. Però entenc els motius: bàsicament si en mineria excaves 20 forats, probablement un d'ells tingui alguna cosa.

There have to be good organizations, like Biocat, good academic and research institutions, venture capital funds, large corporations to make the ecosystem viable and build a market around them and retain good, experienced workers. Nevertheless, universities are at the heart of any cluster, as many of the other members don’t work if you don’t have a good university. It is a source of talent. It all starts here, like hospitals and research institutions, which also play a huge role in training and generating intellectual capital. Afterwards, entrepreneurs and companies will take it to market. In Boston we’ve seen this combination of factors flourish: Harvard, MIT and private investors that are Harvard alumni and want to try the healthcare and life sciences thing. In my opinion, it is also important for investment to come from local funds, because that is what anchors the ecosystem. If they don’t know you and don’t know who else is investing in you, it will be difficult to forge a path.

Esto es siempre un reto. La Universidad de Toronto es enorme y tiene una presencia fuerte en la región. Está muy centrada en la investigación, que es su prioridad número 1, y esto es algo bueno, pero no es siempre lo que necesitan las empresas. Las compañías a veces nos dicen que la universidad debería estar formando algo más que doctorados en nanotecnología, por ejemplo, que ellos necesitan químicos. Idealmente tendríamos una universidad que hablara con las empresas y les preguntara qué necesitan y qué perfiles quieren. No estoy segura de que eso esté pasando. Conseguirlo es algo muy complejo, ya que las universidades reciben inversión o donaciones para investigar unos temas o no para otros.
