‘EU imports of uncooked poultry have increased to 70,000 tonnes in 2005’, according to an USDA briefing reviewing the tariff-rate quotas agreed for Brazilian poultry-meat exports to the EU. Chicken imports are in future expected to account for ‘7.5% of EU domestic consumption compared to 6.5% in 2005’. While ‘for turkey, the import TRQ will cover about 5.5% of EU turkey consumption’. It is estimated that by 2007 imports of broiler meat will be almost equal to EU exports (645,000 tonnes versus 685,000 tonnes).
