Director Socheata Poeuv was born in a refugee camp after her parents escaped from Pol Pot's reign of terror in Cambodia. She grew up in the United States with her brother and two sisters. It was not until she was 25 that her parents told her she was the only child they had together. Her mother had a son from her first marriage and adopted the two daughters of her sister, Poeuv's aunt, orphaned when she died. Poeuv was surprised by their silence. She wanted to know what her parents had experienced in Cambodia. She took them on a trip to their past: the camp they had lived in, the place where her aunt must be buried, and the place where she was born, in a forest where the refugee camp had been. Her parents continue their silence throughout the travels through their homeland. They simply cannot talk about it. Poeuv convinces her father to come along during a visit to a woman who had worked for the Red Khmer, but then he collapses. It is too much for him to bear.

In the framework of model development, a research project that is currently ongoing looks into volunteer caregiving. Using a structural model, we are investigating adults’ decision-making process to provide care to their parents, which includes the modelling of decisions between siblings. Elements that play a role in informal caregiving include the following: the parents’ state of health, travelling distance between parents and children, the number of brothers and sisters, the wage base, and the household situation of adult children. We need to understand the adults’ decision-making processes because, in consequence of population ageing in society, governments intend to stimulate both labour participation and volunteer caregiving. The model allows the evaluation of political measures. This research project into volunteer caregiving is carried out in collaboration with Peter Kooreman (Tilburg University) and Matthijs Kalmijn (Tilburg University).

D: No, I never did. He started coming here after I stepped away from the hemp movement. My younger brother and sisters started spending time with him travelling. As a young adult I didn’t have that opportunity. So now I’m trying to figure out the relationships that he had over the years that I was absent. As I’ve come back to the hemp movement, I’ve had many people come up and tell me their stories of their relationships with my father, and it’s really warming for me to hear all of these stories of inspiration and camaraderie. But I didn’t understand the level of their relationships, and I didn’t understand the level of my father’s relationship with Ben; and I’ve been sort of exploring what that was, so I have a better understanding of who my father was. And who the people that he surrounded himself with and whom he trusted are, and whom he could rely on to help broaden the appeal of this plant and its purpose. And it’s brought me a great deal of… I would say healing, in a sense, from his passing. I get to feel a lot of love from different people in different areas of the world that he’s helped impact, and for me it’s really quite humbling.

Es war wirklich anrührend für mich, von all diesen Geschichten der Inspiration und Kameradschaft zu hören. Ich habe aber das Niveau ihrer Beziehungen und das meines Vaters zu Ben nicht verstanden. Deshalb habe ich eine Art Untersuchung angestellt, wie das war, damit ich besser verstehe, wer mein Vater war. Wer die Leute waren, mit denen er sich umgab, denen er vertraute und auf die er sich verlassen konnte, um die Attraktivität dieser Pflanze und ihres Nutzens zu erhöhen. Das hat mir geholfen, über seinen Tod hinweg zu kommen. Ich habe von verschiedenen Menschen aus unterschiedlichen Gegenden der Welt, in denen er gewirkt hat, viel Zuneigung erfahren, was mich demütig stimmt.

Ik dacht net aan een spannende anekdote waarbij iemand voor straf als ster aan de hemel wordt geplaatst. Het gaat over Orion, die zijn zeven zussen de Plejaden achternazat. De zussen zagen de achtervolging echter als een bedreiging en baden om hulp, waarna de godin van de jacht hun verzoek inwilligde en de broer met een van haar pijlen doodde.
