In Canada, people ate bread, bacon, vegetables, pork and game meat, and a bit of fish. In vegetable gardens they grew cabbage, lettuce, watercress, leeks, beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, shallots, onions, garlic, peas, cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, melons, herbs, and various types of beans. Their diet was supplemented by seasonal foods such as game, fish, wild berries, and maple sugar. Meals most often consisted of soups and broths. Despite vitamin C and D deficiencies, habitants ate fairly well.
