To be included on the World Heritage List, a candidate site must first of all be entered on Switzerland's tentative list. Then, the Federal Office of Cultural Affairs (FOC) and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), in consultation with the cantons concerned and the responsible local bodies, determine the timing for submitting the Nomination File. Together with the responsible local bodies, they closely monitor the compilation of the File and have it reviewed at the national level before forwarding it to the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to UNESCO in Paris for formal submission.

La première étape consiste à inscrire le bien sur la liste indicative de la Suisse. L'OFC et l'OFEV décident ensuite de la date de dépôt de la candidature d’entente avec les cantons et les responsables locaux. L'OFC et l'OFEV accompagnent l'élaboration du dossier de candidature en étroite collaboration avec les organismes responsables. Ils évaluent ces dossiers à l'échelon national avant de les transmettre à la délégation permanente de la Suisse auprès de l'UNESCO à Paris.

Il primo presupposto da adempiere consiste nell'iscrizione dell'oggetto in questione nella lista propositiva della Svizzera. Di concerto con i Cantoni coinvolti e le organizzazioni locali, l'UFC e l'UFAM determinano il termine d'inoltro degli oggetti registrati nella lista propositiva. In stretta collaborazione con gli organi responsabili, l'UFC e l'UFAM supervisionano l'elaborazione delle documentazioni di candidatura ed esaminano quest'ultime su scala nazionale per poi trasmetterle alla delegazione permanente della Svizzera, che le sottoporrà in seguito all'UNESCO a Parigi.
