Jako jedna z najstarszych północnowłoskich gmin, Bologna posiadała miejską autonomię od roku 1115/16. Tutaj w roku 1119 został założony najstarszy uniwersystet w Europie. Potężne miasto handlowe zostało wreszcie w roku 1860 wcielone do Królestwa Włoch. Podczas II wojny światowej historyczne miasto doznało ciężkich szkód. Po wojnie powróciło jednak do dawnej świetności. W roku 1965 Bolonia stała się siedzibą targów. Głównym symbolem gospodarczym miasta jest przede wszystkim przemysł artykułów spożywczych i używek, poza tym przemysł chemiczny, precyzyjny, maszynowy oraz obuwniczy. Bolonia jest ważnym węzłem komunikacyjnym. W licznych szkołach wyższych oraz w konserwatorium studiuje około 99000 studentów. Miasto posiada piękne muzea i biblioteki oraz wiele obiektów godnych zwiedzenia. Zaliczają się do nich przede wszystkim: starannie wyremontowany od roku 1972 zespół starego miasta z pałacami, podcieniami i "wieżami plemion". Jest też wiele kościołów, szczególnie warto wymienić kościół San Domenico z nagrobkiem Św. Dominika.
