The Global Compact was offered by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the occasion of the World Economic Forum in Davos to all company managers, leaders of civil societies, governments and organisations in 1999.

Der Global Compact wurde 1999 von UN-Generalsekretär Kofi Annan anlässlich des Weltwirtschaftsforums in Davos allen Unternehmensführern und Leitern von Zivilgesellschaften, Regierungen und Organisationen angeboten. Die Internationale Handelskammer, ICC und Kofi Annan vereinbarten in enger Zusammenarbeit einen globalen Pakt der Vereinten Nationen, um die Globalisierung sozialer und ökologischer zu gestalten. Die Teilnahme am Global Compact wird durch einen kurzen Brief an den UN-Generalsekretär erklärt. Der Brief enthält den Willen des Unternehmensführers, sich darum zu bemühen, in Zukunft bestimmte soziale und ökologische Mindeststandards einzuhalten. Die Grundsätze des Global Compact sind in zehn Prinzipien gefasst. Von den Mitgliedern des Global Compact wird erwartet, dass sie sich mit ihren Anspruchsgruppen in einem jährlichen Fortschrittsbericht – Communication of Progress, CoP – austauschen. Der Austausch findet durch Offenlegung statt, d. h. durch Veröffentlichung einer einfachen Berichtsform, die den Anspruchsgruppen frei zugänglich ist. Mehr als 2000 Unternehmen aus 80 Ländern haben sich dem globalen Pakt angeschlossen. Global Compact ist die weltweit größte Corporate Citizenship Initiative.

«Certo, non potrebbe essere diversamente. Con questo progetto, lanciato nel 2000 dall’allora segretario delle Nazioni Unite Kofi Annan, al cui fianco ho lavorato impostando i parametri tecnici, ci prefiggiamo come sapete di sconfiggere fame e malattie nei Paesi più poveri del mondo. Anche qui è fondamentale il problema delle infrastrutture e del loro finanziamento. Vuole saperla una cosa? In tutti questi anni non sono riuscito ancora a capire perché quando parliamo di sanità piovono contributi a pioggia e gestiamo letteralmente fondi di miliardi di dollari, ma incontriamo enormi difficoltà quando invece parliamo di scuola di base, di educazione primaria: un problema che forse non è importante come la salute, anche perché qui si parla di differenza fra la vita e la morte, ma secondo me non meno cruciale.
