Plante herbacée vivace (plante pouvant vivre plusieurs années) qui forme des colonies sur les berges, le long des sentiers bordés de rizières et dans les cimetières. On dit qu'elle a été introduite de la Chine aux temps préhistoriques. Elle s'appelle «Higan-bana», fleur de la semaine de l'équinoxe, parce qu'elle fleurit en rouge vif pendant la semaine de l'équinoxe d'automne. Elle a un synonyme «Manjushage», provenant d'un mot sanskrit, qui signifie fleur rouge céleste selon le Sūtra du Lotus. 5 à 7 fleurs serrées naissent au bout de la hampe florale (hampe florale est une tige qui porte les fleurs seules mais non pas de feuilles) qui s'allonge verticalement depuis les bulbes écailleux (bulbes écailleux sont des feuilles hypertrophiées réservant les éléments nutritifs qui sont serrés sur une tige courte). 6 pétales allongés, de 4 cm environ de long, sont cambrés et les étamines longues saillent. Pendant la floraison, elle n'a pas de feuilles. Les feuilles poussent en fin d'automne, passent l'hiver et se flétrissent au printemps suivant. La feuille allongée est longue de 30 à 60 cm environ et large de 6 à 8 mm environ. Elle est vert foncé, luisante et blanchâtre dans le centre le long des nervures. La plante entière contient les substances toxiques, qui sont surtout abondantes dans les bulbes écailleux. L'ingestion cause les vomissements et diarrhées et parfois aboutit à la mort.

Es una planta perenne en los bancos, ls aristas y los cementerios. Hace miles de años vino de China. E la semana equinoccial (Higan)del otoño se abren las flores rojas y llaman Higanbana (flor equinoccial). En el Budismo la llaman Manjyushague. Del tallo bombillo salen los tallos especiales para las flores y en las puntas de esos tallos 5 a 7 flores se les pegan unidas. De los pétalos largos torcidos sale el estambre largo. Cuando se abre las flores las hojas están marchotadas. En el otoño tarde salen y pasan el invierno y se marchitan en la primavera. Las hojas largas son de 30 a 60cms de largo, 6 a 8mms de ancho. El color verde brillante y el centro sobre las venas quedan blancas. En todo el cuerpo contiene veneno particularmente hay mucho en el bombillo. Si se come equivocadamente le da diarrea y vomito y muy pocas veces se muere.

เป็นไม้ยืนต้น ที่เจริญเติบโตในสถานที่มีแดดร่มรำไร เช่นบริเวณแหล่งน้ำ ใกล้ ๆ กับป่า ตามภูเขาลำธาร เป็นไม้ยืนต้นที่ต้องใช้เวลาในการเจริญเติบโตหลายปี ซึ่งเป็นไม้มงคลที่เป็นความเชื่อของคนจีนในสมัยโบราณ ว่าในช่วงเวลาระหว่างฤดูใบไม้ร่วง เป็นเวลาที่กลางวันยาวเท่ากับกลางคืน จะต้องปลูกดอกไม้สีแดงไว้เพื่อเป็นมงคลกับชีวิต และความเชื่อนี้ก็นำเข้ามาในประเทศญี่ปุ่นพร้อมกับพืชพรรณนี้ และยังมีชื่ออีกชื่อคือ'Lycoris radiata' ซึ่งหมายถึง ดอกไม้สีแดงด้วยแสงของธรรมในพระสูตร ซึ่งด้านบนของก้านดอกจะตั้งตรง ยามมีดอกบาน จะไม่เหลือใบ การขยายพันธ์โดยการแตกหน่อ ใช้เหง้าเป็นการแพร่พันธ์ ใน 1 โคนดอกจะประกอบด้ว 5-7 ดอกบานสะพรั่ง กลีบดอกมี 6 กลีบ กลีบบาง ๆ ยาวประมาณ 4 เซนติเมตร ในโคนดอกจะมีเกสรตัวผู้ที่โน้มตัวออกจากดอก และเกสรตัวเมียทีอยู่กลางดอก เมือผสมพันธ์แล้ว หากดอกเหี่ยวลง เมล็ดพันธ์ภายในกลางดอกจะเปลี่ยนเป็นสีดำ และทำหน้าที่ขยายพันธ์ได้อีกทางหนึ่ง ใบเป็นแผ่นบาง และยาว ประมาณ 30 ถึง 60 ซม. กว้าง 6-8 มม. ใบมีสีเขียวเข้ม เป็นมันวาว สลับกับสี ขาว พืชพรรณนี้จะมีพิษอยู่ทั้งต้น โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ในลำต้น หากเข้าไปสัมผัสหรือนำเข้าร่างกายโดยไม่ตั้งใจ พิษร้ายจะทำให้เกิดอาการเช่น อาเจียน และท้องเสีย ในบางกรณีอาจนำไปสู่ความตายได้
