Dur­ing his stud­ies he worked as a stu­dent at PwC in Utrecht in the field of In­dir­ect Tax­a­tion and com­pleted an in­tern­ship at the Dutch Min­istry of Fin­ance in the field of In­ter­na­tional Fis­cal Af­fairs as well as La­bour and Cap­ital In­come Tax­a­tion.

During his studies he worked as a student at PwC in Utrecht in the field of Indi­rect Taxa­tion and completed an internship at the Dutch Ministry of Finance in the field of Inter­na­tional Fiscal Affairs as well as Labour and Capital Income Taxa­tion. He completed the PREMIUM Honours Programme with the Maas­tricht Univer­sity’s Centre for Taxa­tion. He was also a member of the Student Council, the Programme Committee and a Student Stra­tegy Team at Maas­tricht Univer­sity, School of Busi­ness and Econo­mics. Since September 2015 he has been studying for his docto­rate degree in the DIBT Program at WU.

This short teaching case focuses on an inter­na­tio­na­li­sa­tion deci­sion of bauMax in the year 2005. bauMax had been a rela­tively successful Austrian fami­ly-owned retailer in the do-it-your­self (DIY) segment. After a successful expan­sion into neigh­bou­ring coun­tries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in the early 1990s, growth and profi­ta­bi­lity in the home market and in a number of host-­mar­kets became incre­a­singly disap­poin­ting. The owners (and mana­gers) saw further inter­na­tional expan­sion as the key to bring back growth and profi­ta­bi­lity. Romania was iden­ti­fied as one of the target markets. The case explains bauMax’ busi­ness and stra­tegy and pres­ents data on the Roma­nian market situa­tion. The discus­sion focuses not only on the Roma­nian deci­sion but also on the more general logic behind bauMax’ inter­na­tio­na­li­sa­tion.

Es gibt einen enormen länd­er­spe­zi­fi­schen Unter­schied in den Kosten der Lang­zeitb­treuung. 1 Stunde häus­liche Betreuung kann von nur USD 7,- in der Tsche­chi­schen Repu­blik bis zu USD 70,- in Schweden kosten. Ähnlich sieht es mit der insti­tu­tio­nellen Pflege aus, die von USD 160,- pro Woche in Kroa­tien bis zu fast dem Zehn­fa­chen in den Nieder­landen kosten kann. Einige dieser Schwan­kungen können durch die Kosten der Lohn­kosten erklärt werden. In Ländern mit größerem Wohl­stand sind die Lohn­kosten in Rela­tion zu anderen Gütern sehr hoch. Wenn Länder reicher werden und Löhne allge­mein steigen, neigen auch die Löhne in der Lanzeit­pflege dazu zu steigen. Dennoch gibt es in einer so arbei­s­t­in­ten­siven Dienst­leis­tungs­branche nur wenige Mögl­ich­keiten die Produk­ti­vität noch weiterhin zu stei­gern, daher bedarf es um eine Person mit bestimmten Bedürf­nissen zu pflegen wohl in allen Ländern eine ähnliche Anzahl an Stunden.
