Gerard Petrus Fieret was born in The Hague on 19 January 1924 and had a shaky childhood. After his father abandoned the family in 1926, Fieret was brought up by his mother and two elder sisters, but also spent periods with foster families and in children’s homes. As a young man, he was conscripted to perform forced labour in Nazi Germany. At the end of the war, he returned to The Hague and was enrolled for a year at the Hague Academy of Art (today’s KABK). However, it was not until 1965 that Fieret turned his energies to photography; up to then, his output had consisted mainly of gouaches and portraits in charcoal. Henri van de Waal (1910-1972), Professor of Art History at the University of Leiden, was one of the earliest admirers of Fieret’s photography. It is thanks to him that Leiden University now possesses the world’s largest collection of Fieret’s work and that his photography came to the attention of institutions like the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, which held the first major one-man exhibition of his work in 1971.

In the framework of model development, a research project that is currently ongoing looks into volunteer caregiving. Using a structural model, we are investigating adults’ decision-making process to provide care to their parents, which includes the modelling of decisions between siblings. Elements that play a role in informal caregiving include the following: the parents’ state of health, travelling distance between parents and children, the number of brothers and sisters, the wage base, and the household situation of adult children. We need to understand the adults’ decision-making processes because, in consequence of population ageing in society, governments intend to stimulate both labour participation and volunteer caregiving. The model allows the evaluation of political measures. This research project into volunteer caregiving is carried out in collaboration with Peter Kooreman (Tilburg University) and Matthijs Kalmijn (Tilburg University).

La carrière de John Pawson commence doucement au début des années 1980, avec une série de petits projets domestiques et d‘espaces de galerie, comprenant un tout petit appartement pour l’écrivain Bruce Chatwin. Le contraste de ses dessins réduits avec les tendances esthétiques de l’époque était prononcé : il y avait ici une oeuvre dont les racines se trouvaient dans les expressions successives de simplicité qui ont toujours formé une partie des traditions orientales et occidentales. Au milieu des années 1990 le caractère de l’oeuvre de John Pawson change pour toujours suite à deux commissions commerciales cruciales : pour la Cathay Pacific Wing de l’aéroport Chek Lap Kok à Hong Kong et pour le premier magasin Calvin Klein à Manhattan. En 2004, son approche du design pendant longtemps nommé monastique culmine dans la consécration d’un nouveau monastère en Boheme pour une communauté de moines Trappistes Cisterciens. Deux ans après, un pont sur le lac était ouvert au public dans les Royal Botanic Gardens Kew à Londres. Les maisons et les objets d’intérieur restent le coeur de son oeuvre, dans des environnements très divers, comme la Suède rurale, le Tokyo urbain et le centre de Los Angeles. Sa maison à Londres – lieu où la plupart des photographies de ce livre ont été réalisées – illustre parfaitement sa conviction que l’espace domestique peut être formé sans compromis afin de refléter et supporter les rituels de la vie quotidienne.
