Es decir, debe revelar que las relaciones sociales son de tal sistematicidad que se imponen de manera general a quienes estamos implicados en ellas; pero debe hacerlo además mediante la crítica de los discursos, imágenes o actitudes emocionales específicas que son las formas concretas que dichas relaciones sociales adoptan, ocultando la desigualdad y la cruda violencia.

To be effective, a cultural critique must show the links between the major articulations of power and the more-or-less trivial aesthetics of everyday life. It must reveal the systematicity of social relations and their compelling character for everyone involved, even while it points to the specific discourses, images and emotional attitudes that hide inequality and raw violence. It must shatter the balance of consent, by flooding daylight on exactly what a society consents to, how it tolerates the intolerable. Such a critique is difficult to put into practice because it must work on two opposed levels, coming close enough to grips with the complexity of social processes to convince the researchers whose specialized knowledge it needs, while finding striking enough expressions of its conclusions to sway the people whom it claims to describe—those upon whose behavior the transformation of the status quo depends.

Um wirksam zu sein, muss eine Kulturkritik die Verknüpfungen aufzeigen, die zwischen den Hauptartikulationen der Macht und den mehr oder weniger trivialen Ästhetiken des Alltagslebens bestehen. Sie muss die Systematik gesellschaftlicher Verhältnisse und deren zwingenden Charakter für alle Involvierten zum Vorschein bringen, während sie gleichzeitig auf jene spezifischen Diskurse, Bilder und emotionalen Strukturen hinweist, die soziale Ungleichheit und rohe Gewalt verbergen. Die Kritik muss den gesellschaftlichen Konsens stören, indem sie genau beleuchtet, womit die Gesellschaft einverstanden ist und wie sie das Untolerierbare toleriert. Eine solche Kritik in die Praxis umzusetzen ist schwierig, weil sie auf zwei einander entgegengesetzten Ebenen arbeiten muss: Sie muss der Komplexität der sozialen Prozesse ausreichend zu Leibe zu rücken, um die ForscherInnen, deren spezialisiertes Wissen sie benötigt, zu überzeugen, während sie gleichzeitig ihren Schlussfolgerungen einen treffenden Ausdruck verleihen muss, um die Menschen, die sie zu beschreiben beansprucht, umzustimmen – jene also, auf deren Verhalten die Veränderung des Status Quo angewiesen ist.

Da bi bila djelotvorna, kritika kulture mora pokazati veze između glavnih artikulacija moći i uglavnom trivijalne estetike svakodnevnog života. Mora otkriti sustavnost društvenih odnosa i njihove privlačnosti za svakog njihovog sudionika, a istodobno i nadalje upućivati na specifične diskurse, slike i emocionalne stavove koji prikrivaju nejednakost i sirovo nasilje. Mora uzdrmati ravnotežu suglasnosti i pristanka, iznoseći na svjetlo dana upravo ono na što društvo pristaje te pokazati kako društvo tolerira ono što se ne može tolerirati. Takvu je kritiku teško ostvariti u praksi jer ona mora djelovati na dvije suprotstavljene razine; približiti se složenostima društvenih procesa kako bi uvjerila istraživače čije specijalizirano znanje joj je potrebno, a istodobno pronaći dovoljno snažan izraz za svoje zaključke kako bi utjecala na ljude za koje tvrdi da ih opisuje - one, o čijem ponašanju ovisi transformacija postojećeg stanja.
