El presente trabajo estudia los efectos de la aplicación de leyes de corte liberal a la propiedad de la tierra y sus consecuencias sobre la desigualdad en su distribución. A partir del estudio de tres jurisdicciones de la provincia de Buenos Aires, y basándome en fuentes impositivas y demográficas, reviso las consecuencias de la aplicación de tales leyes para un período que va de 1839, en plena expansión de la producción ganadera de la economía porteña, hasta 1914, momento de mayor esplendor de la conocida etapa de Argentina granero del mundo. La metodología esencial es la aplicación del índice Gini para todo el lapso y para periodizaciones parciales; pero a su vez se aplican algunos modos de medición alternativos y menos ortodoxos para comparar la desigualdad, como las modificaciones demográficas y la variación en la proporción de propietarios sobre la población total. El resultado, si bien demuestra el acrecentamiento de la desigualdad, muestra aristas disímiles en cuanto a las secuelas de la aplicación de las normas legales.
