“That morning, 26 June, I think I was in the women’s area, Hut 5. Suddenly we heard a loud noise, the sound of tanks, gunfire, blanks obviously. When a tank fired, the cloth wadding went up in the air. They were loaded with wadding, what mattered was the noise. They drove past at top speed, without looking to see if there were any men, with their tracks covered in blood. There was a Latvian woman, they drove over her and afterwards there were only strips of clothing left, no woman. They put us in huts and surrounded them. I was in a hut with a Ukrainian man, soldiers all around. I looked at the soldiers, they were in front of us, the hut door was open. The man put his head out to look, the other asked him how many they were. He put his head out and bang, right in his head, he fell down. He only had one year’s camp to do. We took him and laid him on wooden slats. He just gurgled, that’s all, he died. I say, a good thing it wasn’t my head. That’s what a man’s fate can be sometimes.”

«Ce matin du 26 juin, j'étais, semble-t-il, dans la zone des femmes, baraque n° 5. Soudain, on a entendu un brouhaha, un vrombissement de chars, des tirs de canons, à blanc évidemment. Quand un char tirait, les chiffons partaient dans l'air. Ils étaient chargés avec des chiffons, ce qui comptait c'était le bruit. Ils passaient à toute vitesse, sans regarder s'il y avait des hommes ou pas, les chenilles couvertes de sang. Il y avait une femme lettone, ils lui ont passé dessus, après cela il ne restait plus que des lambeaux de vêtements, plus de femme. On nous a mis dans les baraques qu'ils ont encerclées. J'étais avec un Ukrainien dans une baraque, les soldats tout autour. Je regardais les soldats, ils étaient en face de nous, la porte de la baraque ouverte. Lui, il mettait sa tête dehors pour regarder, les autres lui ont demandé combien ils étaient. Il a sorti la tête et vlan ! Droit dans la tête, il est tombé. Il lui restait un an de camp. Nous l'avons pris, mis sur les lattes en bois. Il a juste gargouillé et c'est tout, il est mort. Je dis que c'est bien que ce n'était pas ma tête. Voilà quel est parfois le destin de l'homme.»
