En 1909, je deviens auxiliaire de musée à la Commission géologique du Canada, à Ottawa. Même si je prends officiellement ma retraite en 1946, je conserve un bureau à la Commission jusqu'en 1963.

Dann begann es in Central in Strömen zu regen, mein Team sah niedergeschlagen aus, ich war niedergeschlagen und so wollte ich aufgeben. Glücklicherweise liess mich Maren nicht, genauso wie Thomas Tetz, nun in der Funktion eines Rennrichters, anstatt als Musher. Gut, ich stimmte zu nach Circle weiterzufahren.

Decisive multilateral action on environmental threats and challenges can bring wide-ranging health, social and economic benefits. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which underpins our efforts to combat depletion of the earth's fragile protective shield, also contributes to combating climate change, since many of the chemicals controlled under the treaty have also emerged as ones that contribute to global warming. By phasing out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -- once common in products such as refrigerators -- and now deciding to accelerate a freeze and phase-out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), the treaty has provided two benefits at once. I hope Governments will look at such results and feel empowered to act across a wide range of environmental challenges, and not only in prosperous times. Such action should include exploring more fully the natural synergies that can occur among our various multilateral environmental agreements.

And I throw these things together and that doesn’t stop until the series gets going and then I’m pretty certain of what’s happening and then I can plan out…and sometimes it doesn’t happen till the work is half way done. Maybe not quite that bad. But once I have a focus then it’s just work to get it done. And I love the magical part of the ideas coming together because for me that’s really exciting.

Je n’ai pas nécessairement une idée finale de ce que je vais faire quand je commence. J’ai des sortes de sentiments, de pensées, d’idées… tout est flou et je suppose que c’est la marmite. J’y jette toutes ces choses ensemble et cela n’arrête pas avant que la série soit en marche et à ce moment-là, je suis plutôt certaine de ce qui se passe et je peux planifier…et parfois, cela ne se produit que lorsque le travail est à moitié fini. Bien, peut-être pas tant que ça. Une fois que j’ai l’idée principale, il ne s’agit plus que de faire le travail. J’adore la magie des idées qui convergent parce que c’est passionnant pour moi. Et quand les choses se mettent en mouvement…parce que lorsqu’on jette toutes ces choses dans la marmite, certaines remontent à la surface et je sais que c’est un lien entre moi et mon travail. Dans un certain sens, c’est presque comme si le travail commençait à se produire de lui-même. Cela me semble évident et donc, je le laisse se produire. Je suis son partenaire dans sa création. J’ai tendance à vouloir raconter une histoire et les histoires qui m’intéressent sont celles qui selon moi sont importantes à faire connaître au-delà de mon intérêt et de mes besoins personnels. Je pense qu’une des histoires importantes aujourd’hui est le réchauffement de la planète. Et évidemment certains de mes intérêts au sujet de la nature…j’ai toujours eu ce sentiment depuis ma tendre enfance qu’il me semble que nous ne faisons pas les choses comme il faut. Je pense que nous n’agissons pas comme il faut. Je crois que nous avons appris culturellement à faire les choses d’une certaine façon parce que c’est la façon dont on les fait et on se désensibilise ensuite. Et la façon dont je fais mes œuvres – le réalisme et tout ça – il y a beaucoup de gens traditionalistes qui aiment vraiment, ce n’est pas qu’il faut être traditionaliste pour les regarder. Ils sont attirés par les œuvres et ensuite ils commencent à voir ce que je dis dans mon art. Alors j’espère les attirer, les capturer à un niveau personnel alors qu’ils sont placés devant une image qu’ils ne trouvent peut-être pas choquante. Et soudain, les problèmes qui viennent des relations entre les choses que j’ai placées dans une peinture pourraient peut-être les inciter à réfléchir sur la situation globale.
