Montréal, April 19, 2013 ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal applauds the Government of Québec’s decision to build a light rail transportation (LRT) system between the South Shore and the Island of Montréal along the future Champlain Bridge.

“There hasn’t been an exact estimate of the cost of building an LRT, but the Government of Québec has indicated that it will not fund the project on its own,” Mr. Leblanc said. “We understand that this is a massive investment, but at no point should funding issues slow the construction of the new bridge. Obviously, it is essential that work for the LRT be completed when the new bridge is delivered.”

Bien qu'aucune estimation précise des coûts de construction du SLR n’ait été confirmée, le gouvernement du Québec a affirmé qu'il n'en assumerait pas seul le financement. « Nous comprenons qu’il s’agit d’un investissement massif, mais l’enjeu du financement du train léger sur rail ne doit en aucun cas ralentir la construction du nouveau pont. Évidemment, il est essentiel que les travaux de réalisation du SLR soient complétés au moment de la livraison du nouveau pont », a poursuivi M. Leblanc.

This is a reliable, rapid and modern transportation system, the kind a major city should have. It’s significant added value for a bridge that, we hope, will be a signature structure for the city.”

« La congestion dans la région métropolitaine nuit à notre attractivité et à notre productivité. Le SLR permettra d’augmenter significativement le nombre de personnes parcourant ce lien névralgique tout en réduisant la congestion. Il s'agit d'un système de transport fiable, rapide et moderne, à la hauteur d'une grande métropole. Une plus-value importante pour un pont qui, nous l'espérons, sera une œuvre-signature pour la métropole », a ajouté M. Leblanc.
