Wood is a tactile, living, breathing building material, which stimulates the senses. One of wood’s particular charms lies in its gnarls, which give the wood its life and dynamism. These gnarls were a source of inspiration for the detail on the Waterfront’s façades: for example, in the design of the ventilation, which might have risked disturbing the appearance of the façade as a “unifying skin”.

  Museo Jean Cocteau
The architects set out to create a building that allows itself to be discovered and that preserves the mystery of the ‘truth’ of its construction and static elements. The museum accepts its own appearance, while its transparency arouses viewers’ curiosity and attracts them through what it allows them to see. By bringing to mind the idea of a labyrinth, the project reflects the breadth and complexity of Jean Cocteau’s work. It expresses the passage between the worlds of the living and the dead – a theme that preoccupied the artist.

Within the building, a fully glazed courtyard encircled by a layer of free flowing public space in the form of a grand cloister establishes the hub of the Museum. The galleries, exhibition spaces, classrooms, library, auditorium foyer and restaurant / shop, are all equally, non-hierarchically, accessible from the hub. This central public space paired with the courtyard is non-proscriptive enabling a wide range of activities to unfold such as performances, installations, public gathering and receptions.

The lower level is more intensely furnished than the upper level, completely glazed with classrooms and a large hall directly accessible from the footway. The upper level consists of a linear portion that is a little more set back, with a jutting curved portion in line with the conference hall. The changing light during the day and over the year is celebrated by the white panels on the leading-edge solid-surface façade. This material was chosen for its transformative potential: it is soft, warm to the touch yet luminous and deep, easy to repair and 100% recyclable.

Gianni Arnaudo began his career at Studio 65, where he was one of the original driving forces. His first pieces of radical architecture date back to that period when, working with Gufram, he presented Multiples at EuroDomus 1972, which quickly won international acclaim after exhibitions such as: “Italy - New Domestic Landscape” at MOMA in New York. In 1975, Arnaudo set up his own professional practice, which has brought him success and international acclaim. Irony, desecration and “critical design” are Arnaudo’s hallmarks: his works of architecture and design have ensured an ongoing place for him as an icon of art and Pop design.
  Casa JMG
The trullo is the original core and it has been maintained, turned into a residential unit for guests. The two new buildings, in an L-shape, form the protected sides of the open courtyard in combination with the trullo, leaving the pool to occupy the final side. The entire plot - with its slightly diverging levels and olive trees in the courtyard and around the house - provides a powerful link to the local landscape that has been crafted and defined by centuries of manual labour.

Entering Studio Bell’s East Block, visitors are welcomed into a central lobby that opens upward through the building’s five levels. In the lobby, interactive exhibitions and live performances provide visitors with an introduction to the building’s many resources. Two helical staircases flank the lobby and fill the interstitial space between the towers. The main performance hall overlooks the lobby from the second floor, and serves as the building’s programmatic and structural center. With flexible seating and a movable acoustic wall, the 4,000-square-foot, 300-seat space can be closed for more intimate performances or opened fully to the lobby and circulation spaces to fill the entire building with music.

One solution to achieve this was to maintain a degree of rigidity in the alignment of the new and old buildings, producing an understated continuity that helps create the effect of a single block in which the two constructions are comparable. For example: the old and new sections are the same height; the entire northern elevation is divided into horizontal bands, in which the upper section is characterised by varying levels of "transparency" and a partial overlay of an external envelop; and there is a row of windows in the middle band. The design also creates a material and visual break between the sections as the tower for the lift acts like as point of connection, but also simultaneous shows the separation.
  Kulturbau
The Kulturbau houses the public library, the Mittelrhein Museum and the tourist information of Koblenz, with their ‘Zentrum der Rheinromantik’. The combination of these different cultural institutions offers the chance to exploit the synergies between the various institutions. The cultural building stands solitary in the new central square and is a landmark due to this solitary character, its facade design and the conscious elevation in the city. The building has splendid accessibility for visitors; the central lobby has entrances from all sides and is therefore a natural part of the urban fabric.

The shiny, almost fragile aspect of the copper alloy contrasts with the brickwork which has been densely set with hardly any visible jointing to give it the rough aspect of a dry stone wall. Speckled lines of light coloured brick create random horizontal patterns across the brick wall surfaces whilst the vertical ridge lines behind the copper cladding give a vertical rhythm to the other façades. “Between the elegant restraint of its dark brick walls and the rich aspect of its copper alloy cladding the design intention is to make it look like a music box whose walls are punctuated by the variety of openings” explains Olivier Souquet.

The Nelson Mandela High School recalls the figure of the industrial hall, with its long and aerial morphology that shows its rational and intense use, is intimately linked with the Île de Nantes’ past. It inspired the form of, the broad prow of which pays tribute to the district’s Atlantic horizon and reactivates the immemorial ties between boat builders and building builders.
The design thus had to work on all these different levels. The restoration side focused on repairing the ageing main tower (and the slightly lower one next to it), which necessitated quite a bit of consolidation and regeneration work. The architectural goal was to combine the historical side with the potential of the spaces and materials in an interpretation of the building, as a whole, that draws out its quality and creates spaces with a strong sense of identity. As such, the design focused on highlighting the elements that constitute the building, especially the connections between the spaces, and on presenting meaningful suggestions on how to use the spaces. The work was divided into two stages.

Alba is a small town in the heart of the Langhe district, in Southern Piedmont (Italy’s North). As a town, it has leveraged its agricultural and manufacturing heritage into an extraordinary driver of growth. Confectionery giant Ferrero first began operating here in 1946. The company still has its main headquarters in the town. As well as its manufacturing plants and the Fondazione Ferrero, since 2003 the Alba-based confectionary company has been working with the Turin-based a.s. practice and its architects on a project for a brand-new research facility and new company offices. Situated not far from Ferrero’s manufacturing district, to the north-west of Alba’s old town, the research facility and offices occupy and reuse the footprint and abandoned buildings of the former Pellisseri spinning factory.

Part of Stavanger’s cultural heritage lies in the city’s countless wooden houses, which date back to the early 19th century. In fact, the city has Northern Europe’s largest concentration of wooden architecture inside the city limits. It is a cultural heritage the city is proud of, and one, which the Waterfront reflects and interprets in contemporary, urban terms.

This is also the entrance to the dacha. The wings house the bedrooms and bathrooms. The south-west section is slightly lower and has the living room, but it is connected directly to the central hub via three steps. The living room is a special place, with bookshelves and a heater/fireplace. The use of glazing creates a dynamic relationship with nature and allows in light.

On the other side of the entrance hall a wide gallery runs through the east wing of the building. A long, solid oak bench provides a seating area for the parents whilst a row of furniture units visually separates the administrative offices on the left hand side of the gallery from the practice rooms on the right hand side of the gallery. The practice rooms on the ground floor are reserved for the younger pupils because they are more easily accessible from the main entrance. From the main gallery small passage ways lead to further practice rooms with double door systems reserved for louder musical activities. When you enter the gallery the first door to the left is reserved for the school secretariat. It includes again a splayed wooden window with a large window ledge to write on which is beautifully crafted in American red elm. All the doors inside the building have laminated American red elm facing as well as the door frames which are set in to give volume and mass: the entire door facings on both floors represent a total surface area of 130 m². To create rhythm and variety the architects have alternated different shades of white and grey wall coatings between the doorways with full height wood panelling in American red elm crown cut veneer fixed on MDF panels in certain wall sections (110 m² in total). “This is the first time that we specify this wood species and we are very satisfied with the texture and warm tones it creates in the music school as well as its interlocking grain which is clearly visible” comments Olivier Souquet. The strip lighting runs along the top edges of the walls so as to create a subdued indirect lighting that creates soft shadows on the joinery work and stoneware flooring. At the end of the gallery the architects have created a patio which brings more natural daylight both in the practice rooms on the ground floor but also in the dance rooms on the upper floor. The secret inner patio creates a quiet space within the building conducive to concentration. The golden light of its walls spreads gently across the sloped ceilings into the adjacent passage way that wraps around the patio and into the dance halls above.
