Iako je Smokvica najpoznatija po bijelim vinima proizvode se i visokokvalitetna crna vina od kojih se najviše ističe Plavac. Ovo „vatreno“ južnjačko vino, ljubičastocrvene boje, uglavno je suho i jako, više ili manje trpkastog okusa. Plavac je oduvijek bio piće i hrana običnoga težaka i ribara, ali i ukras najluksuznijem stolu. Najbolje ga je poslužiti na temperaturi od 18-20 oC uz ribu i plodove mora ali i uz pršut, sir, tamna mesa te jela koja su pikatnije i jače začinjena.
