Podstawowa aktywność naukowa Zakładu skoncentrowana jest wokół badań reakcji jądrowych przy bardzo wysokich energiach. Szeroki zakres zagadnień (ewolucja od oddziaływań elementarnych do zderzeń cięzkich jonów, miękka fizyka hadronowa, poszukiwanie Plazmy Kwarkowo-Gluonowej) jest badany w przedziale energii od √s=6 GeV do √s=5.5.
The principal activity of the Department is the analysis of a very high energy nuclear reactions. A very broad range of physics questions (evolution from elementary interactions to heavy-ion collisions, soft hadronic physics, searches for the Quark Gluon Plasma state) are studied in the energy range from √s=6 GeV to √s=5.5 TeV.

Wkład Zakładu do obu eksperymentów to konstrukcja detektorów i ich symulacje komputerowe, kalibracja, udział w sesjach zbierania danycch, analiza i interpretacja danych fizycznych.
The Kraków team participates in one of the main experiments at CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider), ALICE. It’ s also involved in the data analysis from the already completed NA49 experiment at CERN SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron). The Kraków contribution to both experiments covers subdetector construction and computer simulation, calibration, data taking, experimental analysis, and interpretation of the physics data. While the Department mainly focuses on experimental studies, active collaboration with theorists is also followed. The Department closely collaborates with leading scientific centers like CERN, GSI Darmstadt and many other. The Department's activity includes also didactic work, like participation in the Scientific Festival, Institute Open Days etc. It also offers the MSc and PhD programmes.

The study of cosmology is theoretical astrophysics at scales much larger than the size of particular gravitationally-bound objects in the universe.Because astrophysics is a very broad subject, astrophysicists typically apply many disciplines of physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, nuclear and particle physics, and atomic and molecular physics. In practice, modern astronomical research involves a substantial amount of physics.

Rozwijająca się terapia protonowa w Instytucie i budowa Centrum Cyklotronowego Bronowice stają się inspiracją do podjęcia zintensyfikowanych badań nad wpływem promieniowania jonizującego na materię żywą oraz nad zrozumieniem przyczyn i przebiegiem procesów nowotworowych .
Research interests of the new Department and the techniques used continue to develop in the direction of biomedical research. Developing proton therapy at the Institute and construction of the Bronowice Cyclotron Center have become an inspiration to conduct intensified research on the effects of ionizing radiation on living matter and on understanding the reasons and cancerous process. Therefore, October 1, 2012, under the Director IFJ PAN Order No. 14/2012 from 21 September 2012, the Department of Radiation and Environmental Biology has been joined to NZ52 Department which together formed the Department of Experimental Physics of Complex Systems at the forefront of which was the former head of the Department of Applied Spectroscopy prof. Wojciech M. Kwiatek. After the taken up by him function of Head of the Division of Interdisciplinary Research, NO5, from 1 January 2016 Assoc. Prof. Czesława Paluszkiewicz was appointed as head of the NZ52 Department. That day, from the Department of Experimental Physics of Complex Systems the Department of Biophysical Microcircuits has separated under Assoc. Prof M. Lekka.

Główny układ pomiarowy składa się z komory (która zawiera diodę LED o wysokiej jasności, okienko wyjściowe z SiN3, powielacz elektronów Channeltron), stolik z możliwością justowania położenia w 3D z zamontowaną szalką Petriego służącą jako pojemnik na komórki, detektor cząstek z powierzchniową barierą krzemową umieszczony na ruchomym ramieniu, mikroskop z kamerą CCD. Centrum całego układu stanowi komputer, który bezpośrednio kontroluje pozycjonowanie i zaślepianie, a także zbiera informacje z mikroskopu i detektorów przy użyciu dedykowanego oprogramowania.
The main measurement stage consists of a chamber (including: high brightness LED diode, Si3N4 exit window and a channeltron), a 3D moving stage equipped with a Petri-dish as a cell container, a particle silicon surface barrier detector positioned on a moving arm, and microscope with a CCD camera. The central unit of the system is a computer which directly controls positioning and blanking processes and collects information from the microscope and the detectors using an electronic data acquisition system. The facility is equipped also in two optical systems for cell visualisation and examination: the off-line setup (sample preparation room) and the on-line one (at the experimental chamber).

Zmiany strukturalne w IFJ PAN jakie nastąpiły w listopadzie 2005 roku, po powstaniu Oddziałów Naukowych, spowodowały podział Zakładu Spektroskopii Jądrowej i 1 stycznia 2006 roku na mocy Zarządzenia Dyrektora IFJ PAN nr 31/2005 z dnia 6 grudnia 2005 roku powstał Zakład Spektroskopii Stosowanej NZ52.
"The origins of the Institute of Nuclear Physics date back to 1955. The Institute was established thanks to the efforts of prof. Henry Nuclear Physics in Kraków-Bronowice as the II Division of the Warsaw Institute of Nuclear Sciences." Within the the Institute there was a Nuclear Spectroscopy Division, headed by prof. Dr. Andrew Hrynkiewicz. In this Department there were two laboratories: Laboratory of Nuclear Structure and the Laboratory Applied Spectroscopy. Research carried out in the laboratory increasingly had changed its profile and expanded in the direction of research in field called "life science". Structural changes in the IFJ PAN that occurred in November 2005, after the establishing of Scientific Branches caused the division of the Department of Nuclear Spectroscopy and the Department of Applied Spectroscopy, NZ52, has been came into being 1 January 2006 under the the Director IFJ Order No 31/2005 from 6 December 2005. His manager was former head of the Laboratory Assoc. Porf. Wojciech M. Kwiatek.

Spektrometr nanoIR2 firmy ANASYS (USA) jest drugim w świecie systemem wyposażonym w dwa lasery: optyczny oscylator parametryczny (OPO) i laser kwantowo-kaskadowy (QCL). Spektrometr umożliwia badanie rozkładu przestrzennego związków chemicznych w badanych strukturach (Rys.
AFM- IR (NanoIR) method combines the atomic force microscopy (AFM) with spectroscopy in the infrared range (IR). It is a modern technique, using which it is possible to study objects smaller than it is allowed by diffraction limit for infrafred radiation. The ANASYS (USA) NanoIR2 spectrometer is the second in the world system equipped with two lasers: optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and quantum cascade laser (QCL). The spectrometer enables to study the spatial distribution of chemical compounds in the specified structures (Fig. 1 B) and spectral measurements in the infrared range (Fig. 1 C) with nanometric spatial resolving power.Currently in the laboratory, among all, studies are conducted on the effect of the chromatin structure on the formation of chromosome aberrations, the effect of ionizing radiation on the chemical structure of cells, tissues and study the conformation of DNA in a spore forms of bacteria.

W strukturze Zakładu mieści się jedno Laboratorium ( Pracownia Badań Skażeń Promieniotwórczych Środowiska) i kilka zespołów roboczych dedykowanych do określonych zadań badawczych. Pracownia Badań Skażeń Promieniotwórczych Środowiska prowadzi oznaczenia plutonu, ameryku, kiuru, uranu, toru, polonu, 90Sr, 63Ni, 7Be, 99Tc i 137Cs w różnego rodzaju próbkach środowiskowych.
The Department is organized in one Laboratory (Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory) and less formal task groups dedicated to deal with well defined problems. The Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory conducted measurements of plutonium, americium, uranium, thorium, polonium, 90Sr, 63Ni, 7Be, 99Tc and 137Cs in different kind of environmental samples. The main equipment consist of low background, high resolution (germanium) gamma-rays spectrometers, semiconductor alpha spectrometers and liquid scintillation spectrometers. The laboratory is involved in some Ministry of Science and Higher Education research projects and one Parent-Bridge project from Foundation for Polish Science. One of governmental research project and Parent-Bridge project are about radioactive contamination of Spitsbergen. Two other governmental research projects are related to 99Tc in environment of Poland and to plutonium, americium and 90Sr in human bones. Two PhD thesis are under preparation within those projects. Since 1990 the Laboratory takes part in the Polish state monitoring network for radioactive contamination organized by National Atomic Agency (PAA) and Central Laboratory for Radiation Protection. The air filters are exposed and measured in the weakly basis for the presence of gamma-emitters with the detection limit below 1 µBq/m3. Since 2007 we belong also to the all-round world scientific network of laboratories conducting similar measurements (coordinated by University of Tenerifa, Spain). Within this framework the air-filters from Botswana are also measured. Recently two PhD works were prepared using air-filter samples collected during past years. One work was devoted to use of cosmogenic radionuclides (22Na, 7Be) in investigations of vertical transport of aerosols in the troposphere. The second one was about using Pu isotopes in tracing pathways of aerosols. Here, besides alpha spectrometry the mass spectrometry was introduced as measurement technique in collaboration with Institute of Geological sciences. The whole body spectrometer with a XIX century steel shield obtained from University Hospital of Łódź was installed in IFJ in 2008 and during 2010 it was equipped with two germanium detectors and NIM electronics besides existing large scintillation detector. The introduction to the projects related to the development of nuclear power in Poland plays important role among the scientific plans of the Department for incoming years.
