Entrambi i nomi provengono dal dialetto francone e, visto che non si può determinare con sicurezza se Albinen a quei tempi (tra il settimo e il nono secolo) fosse ancora una foresta vergine o un alpeggio, il significato rimane controverso.

There is disagreement among scholars about whether the name Albinen is derived from “Albignion” (meaning “alp”) or from “Arbignon” (meaning “forest”). Both “Albignion” and “Arbignon” are Old French terms, but since we have no evidence on whether the area around present-day Albinen was pastureland or was still wooded in the relevant era (7th to 10th century A.D.), we do not know which derivation is correct. But whether the area was still a wilderness in the days of the Franks or was being used for grazing cattle, Celtic graves attest to the fact that it was already settled in prehistoric times.

Les érudits ne parviennent pas à se mettre d’accord sur l’origine du nom d’Albinen; soit il provient du mot « Albignion » et signifie « Alpe », soit il a pour origine le mot « Arbignon » qui signifie « Forêt ». Etant donné que les deux noms proviennent du franc et que nous ne savons pas avec certitude si, à cette époque (VIIe - Xe siècle), il y avait encore une forêt vierge ou un alpage là où se trouve Albinen aujourd’hui, l’interprétation du nom du lieu est également controversée. Über die Bedeutung des Namens Albinen sind sich die Gelehrten nicht einig; entweder bedeutet es Alpe aus "Albignion" oder Wald, entstanden aus "Arbignon". Da beide Namen aus dem Fränkischen herstammen und wir, wenigstens für Albinen für diese Zeit (7. - 10. Jahrhundert) nicht mit Sicherheit wissen, ob hier noch ein Urwald oder eine Alpe war, ist auch die Deutung umstritten. Mag nun zur Frankenzeit hier wieder eine Wildnis oder eine Alpweide gewesen sein, sicher ist indessen, dass diese Gegend lange vor dieser Zeit bewohnt war, wie uns keltische Gräber mitgeteilt haben, die in vorgeschichtliche Zeit zurückreichen.
