The key of this test is to see the ability to jettison the cockpit’s door during an emergency situation but also to see the overall behavior of the structure when winds are blowing from different angles. During a similar test on HB-SIA, the cockpit was mounted on the roof of a car and driven around the runway. This time Solar Impulse has decided to use a wind tunnel because all the variables that need to be tested are easier to control. In fact, the wind tunnel has a turn table module which allows tested objects to be rotated around their axis. This function allows the engineers to control the wind direction to the nearest degree and consequently study the behavior of the cockpit and materials in different situations such as during certain manoeuvers, cruising speed as well as emergency situations.

Les ingénieurs doivent évaluer d'une part la capacité de la porte du cockpit à se détacher du reste de la structure en cas d'urgence et d'autre part le comportement global de la structure lorsque les vents soufflent de différents angles. Pour le HB-SIA, des tests semblables ont été effectués : l'équipe a fixé le cockpit sur le toit d'une voiture pour lui faire faire des tours sur la piste. Cette fois-ci, Solar Impulse a décidé d'avoir recours à une soufflerie car toutes les variables qui doivent être testées sont plus faciles à contrôler. En effet, la soufflerie est dotée d'une table tournante qui permet aux objets testés de pivoter sur un axe. Grâce à cette fonction, les ingénieurs peuvent contrôler la direction du vent au degré près et ainsi étudier le comportement du cockpit et des matériaux dans différentes situations, notamment lors de certaines manœuvres, lors de situations d'urgence et lorsque l'appareil maintient sa vitesse de croisière.
