With this type of drill, small diameter, accurate holes can be drilled into very hard materials. Rough and Ready Gems now offers ultrasonic drilling on our briolettes. We have the most success with 0.020", 0.025" and 0.030" diameter holes, depending upon the application. Stuller manufactures a "pearl bail", item #29 in their Findings Catalog, which may be trimmed into a pin-cap for use on briolettes. Trimming the pearl bail's top cap and pin to size will give excellent results for setting briolettes when top drilled. When using a pin-cap with a drilled briolette, it is important that the pin diameter and length match the hole.

In April 1996 they hit their biggest strike so far: a crystal-lined open vein 10 cm wide, and 1 by 4 meters across! From that one pocket they have recovered large quantities of lower-grade material plus dozens of exceptional specimens from miniature to large cabinet size. Particularly amazing are the large cabinet specimens which are unlike anything ever removed from the Red Cloud mine. This success will finance the next stripping phase; with continued discoveries they hope eventually to remove the entire vein for at least 50 meters down-dip by this open-pit method. From there down, based on what they have learned about wulfenite distribution, they will stope only the potentially richest areas.

The mine was given new life in 1906 when the Cerro De Pasco Copper Company (later called Corporation) took up the property. They started mining a series of sub-vertical fissure veins striking East-West through the main mineralised zone and mined these to about 2,000 feet (600m) in depth. In the late 1940’s when the copper was largely worked out a decision was made to start working the Pb-Zn orebodies which had up to that time remain unworked. Pb and Zn were much more in demand and flotation technology was now available to recover the sulphide minerals. A decision was made to move the town and the open pit was started (the equipment bought is still in use today – above photo refers).

This is the main open pit. Quite a hole – measuring about 2km north-south by about 1km east-west (left to right) and around 350m. in depth. We are currently pushing back the east wall (you can see some of the equipment) and considering a proposal to deepen by about another 100m. The city of Cerro de Pasco surrounds the pit to the south (the bit you can see in the distance), the east and northeast. The deposit sits inside one side of a collapsed volcanic neck. The grey material centre to right is almost solid pyrite containing about 5oz/tonne of silver. The underground mine is mostly under the open pit. Current production around 2.5 million tonnes per year grading about 7.5%Zn, 2.5%Pb and 1ozAg.

We recommend epoxy adhesives due to their strength, ability to fill gaps (up to 0.040"), quick setting times, shock resistance, and transparency. Be sure to mix them thoroughly and in the proper proportions. Mix more epoxy than you will need. Small quantities are harder to measure correctly. Allow to stand shortly for bubbles to rise. Wet both the briolette hole and pin or cap. Work bubbles out of epoxy in drill hole for best appearance. Epoxies can be broken down with relatively low heat ( 300-400 F ), in case a piece needs disassembly (fumes are toxic). Uncured epoxies can be cleaned up with acetone or mineral spirits. See the Epoxy Tips section for more information.

When the operation ceases, that is, when they can no longer afford to go deeper, government regulations will force them to fill in the pit, sealing whatever remains at a depth relatively inaccessible to future collecting. The pit is expected to take in the vertical shaft which now provides access to the lower reaches of the vein, so even that route of approach will probably be gone. At that point the mine will be quite effectively closed for the foreseeable future. Consequently we can only hope the operation will remain profitable as long as possible, so that the maximum number of specimens can be recovered.

This time, the hole was a horizontal tunnel instead of an open pit. Sesame was the first to inspect the mine entrance in the 7th photo (to the right). We speculated the goal of this mine may have been gold instead of silica. The tunnel disappeared far into the Earth, but water dripped from the ceiling, the floor of the tunnel was heavily flooded and even the entrance was incredibly slippery. (8th photo just below/left)

The agates and geodes were confined to an amygdaloidal horizon exposed in only one section of the south side of the quarry wall. They were of such quality that they easily compared to those from the historic “blue hole” perhaps even surpassing them in abundance and size. This quarry is, without doubt, the most important Scottish agate locality of recent times.

1) Drilling a vertical blind hole in the top of the briolette 2-4 mm deep, and adhering a pin-cap in the hole works well for all briolettes, and makes for a finished product lighter in look and feel than the conical cap method, below. This method is best for briolettes too small to cap and allows for one standard pin-cap for most briolettes.

As happens with a lot of large open pits, the concentrator was not sited far enough away from the pit and is now sitting on the north-west edge. There may be a need to rebuild the concentrator further away in the not so distant future. Also, the main hoisting shaft (Lourdes - blue) is in the way.

On Memorial day weekend I had the opportunity to return to Treasure Mountain Diamond Mine to dig for diamonds. It may sound odd, but I've been so busy with the business end of things at the mine that I haven't had the chance to do any collecting since 1999! Leaving home at 5:30 AM, I arrived at the mine at 8:15 and was glad to see my collecting partner Dick Holmes had already selected a spot to dig (that way if we didn't find anything I could tease him that it was his fault for picking a crummy spot). We started out in the usual fashion - clear all the dirt off the ledge, clean away the rubble left behind by previous diggers, and inspect the wall for pockets missed by previous diggers. By 11:00 AM I hit our first pocket - right at the base of the wall, a cantaloupe-sized vug filled with calcite, dirt & sand, and some sparkling Little Falls diamonds. This inspired us to a frenzy of rock moving, and we soon had collected several more similar pockets in the immediate area of the first one. Although we found no scepters in these pockets we were finding nice diamonds up to 2½" of unusual clarity and with remarkably high luster. These finds carried us through an afternoon short on pockets and long on sweat. The weather was cool and rainy, but our large tarp kept us relatively dry. At 6:00 PM Dick packed up and left for home (with all the crystals we had found) to celebrate his mother's 80th birthday on Sunday. I kept digging.

At the top of the mine, long black veins of compressed mica ran along the walls. But the most striking part were the huge black tourmalines embedded lower down in the mine, directly in the rock walls, many of them as big as my arms (4th photo, note the rockhammer for perspective, and 5th photo). More pressure lower in the mine had grown tourmalines instead of mica veins. The tourmalines made a variety of shapes in the walls including parallel lines, fans, bullet like blobs formed from an end on view, and even in some places, meandering lines as if black paint had been splashed against the walls. The walls were steep and in many places, deep pockets had been dug into the walls, but Sesame Pooch easily danced up the sides using tiny footholds that only a dog could find. In a corner of the mine, Sesame also found a small 'short cut' tunnel that also led out of the mine (6th photo just above) We spent considerable time investigating and collecting bits of black tourmaline, until Dave found another hole in the ground further away.
