Im 16. Jh. wurde die Burg von den Grafen von Wolkenstein, der Familie des bekannten Minnesängers Oswald von Wolkenstein, erheblich vergrößert und erhielt ihr heutiges Aussehen.

At the time it was one of the largest fortified castles ever. In the 16th century the castle was taken over by the von Wolkenstein counts, the family of the famous minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein, and significantly enlarged to what it is today. The descendents of the von Wolkensteins still own the castle, part of which is still used as a home. However, the chapel, the weapons store, the garden and the dungeons can be visited. The highlight, however, is the 13th century fresco painted by Hartmann von Aue. It was discovered in 1972 and is the oldest profane mural in the German-speaking world. The frescos can be found in the castle’s tap room and depict the epic of Iwein, one of the twelve knights of King Arthur’s Round Table.

Austragungsort der Nachtexkursion ist das Biotop Kofl-Aue in St. Johann. Mit Treffpunkt um 18.30 Uhr bei der Ortseinfahrt von St. Johann/Ahrntal (Kohler Waldile), beginnt sie nach einer kurzen Wanderung zum Ufer der Ahr mit einer Vorstellung des Projektes „Einzugsgebietsplan Obere Ahr“.

L’escursione notturna si terrà nel biotopo Kofl-Aue (ontaneto Kofl) a San Giovanni in Valle Aurina, con ritrovo alle ore 18:30 presso il bosco “Kohler Waldile” all’ingresso del paese di San Giovanni. Dopo una breve passeggiata verso la sponda dell’Aurino, l’escursione avrà inizio con un’introduzione al progetto “Piano di gestione del bacino idrografico Alto Aurino” e successivamente una illustrazione delle caratteristiche del bosco ripariale nel biotopo Kofl-Aue da parte della guida Mario Larcher, del Parco Naturale.
