Taufers/Tubre is situated at the border of Swiss Engadine (Canton of Graubünden). Interesting groups of typical old Rhaeto-Romanic houses lend character to the village. Romanic frescoes can be admired in the Church of St. Johann in Taufers. It is worth visiting the nearby Rotund and Reichenberg ruins, owned until 1310 by the Churer bishops, and on the way to Glurns the Calvenbrücke bridge, a site of historical battles. A visit to the St. Johann Benedictine Monastery dating back to Carolingian times (with early medieval wall frescoes) on the other side of the Italian-Swiss border is highly recommended. This monastery is one of the most important artistic monuments in Europe and has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List!

At the 1983 meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the Convent of St John was elevated to a World Heritage Site. It is the most important church building in Switzerland from the period before the turn of the millennium, with the largest preserved cycle of frescoes from the Early Middle Ages.

The activity was given a virtuous touch when nuns from the Klingental abbey took advantage of the Rhine on hot summer days in the 15th century. When swimming in open areas of the Rhine was banned in the 19th century, construction of bathing areas was initiated by the "Gesellschaft für das Gute und Gemeinnützige" (a society established for the common good). Their resounding success led to a total of four bathing areas, two of which are still in operation today. In the 1930s the ban on swimming in open areas of the Rhine was lifted, and nowadays the river is used every summer by hundreds of people with their special swimming bags invented in the 19th century. One of the highlights of the summer swimming season is Basel Rhine Swimming, which has been organised by the Basel department of the Swiss Lifesaving Society since 1980 and which attracts more than a thousand participants each year. And there are some Basel residents who enjoy a dip in the Rhine every day, irrespective of the season.

Inthe middle a little portal with columns opens up, surmounted by three windowsand by an inscription reporting the name of Pontiff Leone XIII. The interior encompasses three naves with crossvaults. In the back, the apse embodies windows that are decorated by polychromeglass. The decors and furniture do not have remarkable historico-artisticvalue.

High above Chiusa the majestic Sabiona abbey sits on a mighty rock known as the “holy mountain”. The area was already settled during the New Stone Age and the abbey is one of the oldest pilgrimage destinations in Tyrol. It is from here that the Christian faith is said to have spread throughout South Tyrol. Since the 17th century the abbey has been occupied by Benedictine nuns and for some time was also the bishop’s see. The abbey can be reached from Chiusa town centre via a crossroads and a promenade. Four churches belong to the abbey and are popular destinations for pilgrims: the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche), St. Mary’s Chapel (Marienkappelle), the convent church (Klosterkirche) and the Church of the Holy Cross (Heilig Kreuz Kirche). Due to the strict Benedictine rules, the abbey itself is only accessible to the nuns.
