De exotische ervaring is, wederom in de woorden van Todorov, ‘veel meer [dan naïviteit of totale onwetendheid] een zaak van een wankel evenwicht tussen verrassing en vertrouwdheid, tussen vervreemding en identificatie. Het geluk van de exoot is broos: als hij de anderen niet kent, begrijpt hij ze niet; als hij ze te goed kent dan ziet hij ze niet meer staan. De exoot kan niet op zijn lauweren rusten want des te eerder bereikt hij de staat waarin datgene dat hij ervaart saai geworden is. Dan bereikt de exoot het punt dat hij klaar is om weer te vertrekken, zoals Segalen zegt, hij moet in feite niets anders dan afwisseling in stand houden. Misschien is het exotisme hierdoor van een levensvoorschrift verworden tot een artistieke methode; denk aan Chekhovs verbanning (‘ostranenie’) en Brechts ‘Verfremdung’ (Frans: destanciation, English: ‘defamiliarization’).

Director Daniel Fish asked actors Christina Rouner and Thomas Jay Ryan to play the last scene from the film ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ by Michel Gondry. For two hours.
