Binnen het Europese Elixir-project, een consortium dat zich richt op datagerelateerde uitdagingen in de life sciences, wordt het REMS-systeem als onderdeel van een Authenticatie en Autorisatie Infrastructuur (AAI) verder uitgewerkt. SURFnet maakt actief deel uit van de AAI Task Force binnen dit project waarin ons eigen OpenConext ook een bouwsteen in de infrastructuur zal vormen. Het is in die context denkbaar dat andere repositories, catalogi en pipelinesystemen, bijvoorbeeld de door onderzoekers van UMC Groningen ontwikkelde MOLGENIS software suite, ook via SURFconext toegankelijk worden gemaakt en interacteren met REMS of vergelijkbare systemen.

The M203 grenade launcher has been developed between 1967 and 1968 by the AAI Corporation of USA on the contract from US Army. this contract has been issued on the basis of the experience, gained by the US armed forces in Vietnam with the M79 40mm grenade launcher (which was successful design but required an additional personal defense weapon to be carried by grenadier) and unsuccessful XM-148/CG-4 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher,developed in mid-sixties by Colt in attempt to cure deficiencies of the M79.

В основу контракта лег опыт, полученный при массовой эксплуатации 40мм гранатомета М79 американскими войсками во Вьетнаме. Этот опыт показал нужность и чрезвычайную полезность 40мм гранатометов, однако выявил и слабые стороны М79, в первую очередь необходимость в дополнительном оружии самообороны для гранатометчика. Первая попытка создать гранатомет, устанавливающийся под штатную армейскую винтовку М16А1 фирма Colt предприняла еще в середине 1960х годов, однако опыт эксплуатации 40мм гранатомета XM-148/Colt CG-4 показал его ненадежность и небезопасностьв обращении, подтвердив однако правильность самой концепции подствольного гранатомета. В 1970 году первые предсерийные подствольные гранатометы AAIXM203 были отправлены на испытания во Вьетнам. По результатам этих испытаний армия США заказала значительное количество новых гранатометов, однако отсутствие у AAI необходимой производственной базы привело к тому, что контракт на производство М203 получила фирма Colt. В дальнейшем гранатомет М203 претерпел ряд незначительных модификаций. В частности, появился вариант с укороченным на 3 дюйма (76мм) стволом, предназначенный для установки на карабины М4 командования сил специальных операцийСША (US SOCOM), вариант, предназначенный для установки на винтовки на направляющие типа Picatinny Rail. Выпуск М203 в США продолжается и поныне, кроме США его копии производятся в Южной Корее, Египте и Болгарии (в двух последних — в вариантах для установки наавтоматы Калашникова АКМ или АК-74). Гранатометы М203 состоят на вооружении не только в США, но и в Австралии, Израиле, Турции, на Филиппинах и еще в целом ряде стран.
