Succession to a naturalized grassland from former agricultural land and pastures is accompanied by changes in plant biodiversity and in the soil community. These changes are the result of a reduction or elimination of management, fertilizer applications and of grazing by large herbivores. We review soil biology studies on agricultural land that are in various successional stages towards naturalized grasslands, where interactions between plant species composition changes and the soil ecology affect each other. In many chronosequence studies, the soil microbial community tends to shift towards a less bacterial, and more fungal dominated food web energy channel following a reduction in fertilizer inputs and grazing intensity. Whereas changes in microarthropod communities are obscured, nematode trophic functional group (ecological guild) changes respond to both plant and soil community changes. There are opportunities to further study the feedback interactions between roots and soil organisms in grasslands. A better understanding of the molecular feedback mechanisms would be beneficial in long-term grassland management.

Many food and waterborne outbreaks of infectious disease are caused by viruses. While numerous methods exist and are being developed to test food and water for the presence of enteric viruses, there is no standard control for the comparison of different methods. Potential control viruses should be well characterized, share the physical characteristics of the enterically infecting viruses and not normally be associated with foods. Here, the feline calicivirus (FCV) is proposed as a sample process control for methods aimed at the extraction and detection of RNA viruses in food and water. FCV is shown to be useful as a control for the extraction of hepatitis A virus (HAV) from water using filtration technology and from strawberries using the Pathatrix™ system. The FCV standard provides a valuable quality control tool when testing potentially contaminated food samples.

Together with the estrogen receptor (ER) alpha, estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) mediates many of the physiological effects of estrogens. As ERβ is crucially involved in a variety of important physiological processes, its activity should be tightly regulated. ERβ regulation is achieved by hormone binding as well as by posttranslational modifications of the receptor. Furthermore, ERβ expression levels are under circadian control and can be regulated by DNA methylation of the ERβ promoter region. There are also a number of factors that can interfere with ERβ activity, such as phytoestrogens, endocrine disruptive chemicals, and growth factors. In this article, we outline different mechanisms of ERβ regulation and how they are implicated in various diseases. We also discuss how these insights might help to specifically target ERβ in drug design.

Escherichia coli O157:H7, an occasional contaminant of fresh produce, can present a serious health risk in minimally processed leafy green vegetables. A good predictive model is needed for Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) purposes, which adequately describes the growth or die-off of this pathogen under variable temperature conditions experienced during processing, storage and shipping. Literature data on behaviour of this pathogen on fresh-cut lettuce and spinach was taken from published graphs by digitization, published tables or from personal communications. A three-phase growth function was fitted to the data from 13 studies, and a square root model for growth rate (μ) as a function of temperature was derived: μ=(0.023*(Temperature-1.20))2. Variability in the published data was incorporated into the growth model by the use of weighted regression and the 95% prediction limits. A log-linear die-off function was fitted to the data from13 studies, and the resulting rate constants were fitted to a shifted lognormal distribution (Mean: 0.013; Standard Deviation, 0.010; Shift, 0.001). The combined growth– death model successfully predicted pathogen behaviour under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions when compared to new published data. By incorporating variability, the resulting model is an improvement over existing ones, and is suitable for QRA applications.

‘Wendy’ strawberry (Fragaria ·ananassa Duchesne) was commercially introduced in Canada in July 2006 by the Atlantic Food and Horticulture Research Center (AFHRC) of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. ‘Wendy’, a short-day cultivar, ripens in the early season, offering growers an alternative to ‘Annapolis’ with good fruit quality and yield. Plants of ‘Wendy’ are vigorous, resembling ‘Evangeline’ in habit, and they produce ample runners to establish matted rows. In greenhouse screening with multiple races of Phytophthora fragariae Hickman var. fragariae, ‘Wendy’ has demonstrated partial resistance.

The natural organic acids present in apple juice give it its characteristic slightly acidic taste (pH 3.3-3.7). PPO functions very well at this level of acidity. However, by slightly increasing the acidity of the juice, it can be inactivated: simply sprinkling lemon juice (~ pH 2) on cut apple pieces prevents browning. It is therefore possible to inactivate the enzyme by acidifying the juice (down to pH 2). However, in order to obtain a juice that does not make you pucker, the acidity must subsequently be corrected! In the laboratory, the pH can be lowered by adding an acid (such as hydrochloric acid or HCl) and then raised by adding a base (such as sodium hydroxide or NaOH). When the acid and the base interact, they cancel each other out, producing water (H2O) and salt. However, the salt (in this case, NaCl or table salt) creates a problem. Table salt may be good on tomatoes and cucumbers, but it lends apple juice a quite undesirable salty taste. The solution is bipolar membrane electrodialysis.
