To date, politicians have demanded little from the food sector. Unlike the construction, transport and industrial sectors where various regulations and mechanisms have already been introduced, the tools required for climate policy are largely absent. Eva Reinhard, deputy director of FOAG, the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture and Daniel Felder, scientific officer at FOAG called for greater commitment on the part of all players in the food chain. Anita Idel insisted that the externalised costs of production such as environmental pollution should be reflected in product prices; this would make sustainable agriculture competitive. Martin Rufer from SBV, the Swiss Farmers Union stressed that we should not shift our emissions abroad by increasing imports. During the afternoon session, the private sector, i.e. retailers and the catering industry, also put forward effective tools on how emissions from the food industry could be limited.
