Par exemple, nous avons parlé de la comédie musicale HAIR et de la controverse qui s'ensuivit en raison de sa prise de position concernant la guerre du Vietnam, le radicalisme des hippies, les droits civiques et sexuels. Dans la même veine, nous avons appris une chanson très entraînante intitulée « Seize the Day » (« Saisis l'instant ») de la comédie musicale NEWSIES. La comédie musicale raconte le triomphe de petits vendeurs de journaux contre Joseph Pulitzer, le patron de l'entreprise de presse, lors de la grève de 1890. Les élèves ont choisi un sujet brûlant d'actualité, contre lequel les gens protestent ou au nom duquel ils se rassemblent tel que les droits des animaux ou encore la réforme de l'immigration. Ils ont ensuite créé leurs propres pancartes qui ont servi d'accessoires pour la chanson et la danse qu'ils ont mémorisées.

En interposant devant ces châssis des panneaux translucides teints de différentes couleurs et actionnés par des cordages, on pouvait changer la tonalité générale ou locale du tableau, permettant ainsi de produire sur le tableau entier, ou en quelques points, des effets allant du brouillard intense au soleil éclatant. Le spectacle durait environ quinze minutes, après quoi la salle entrait à nouveau en rotation et venait progressivement se placer devant une nouvelle ouverture identique à la précédente, pratiquée dans la circonférence de la salle. Un nouveau tableau se présentait à la vue des spectateurs et un nouveau quart d’heure d’animation par des jeux de lumière pouvait commencer.

Le ton de la journée a été donné par l'équipe Next Generation regroupant des étudiants en dernière année de secondaire et leurs sympathisants qui ont réussi à amasser la somme de 35 906$ pour devenir l'équipe la plus performante de l'événement en termes de levée de fonds. Pratiquement toute l'équipe du département de psychiatrie de l'HGJ, dirigé par le Dr Karl Looper, ainsi que plusieurs médecins et infirmières de l'hôpital se sont mobilisés pour l'occasion. « Aucun autre événement au Québec n'est parvenu à sensibiliser à ce point l'opinion publique ni à mobiliser autant de ressources au profit de la santé mentale, souligne le Dr Looper. Davantage de sensibilisation, un accès aux soins amélioré, la réduction de la stigmatisation associée à la maladie mentale et la possibilité d'intervenir rapidement en cas de crise s'avèrent essentiels et seront mis en œuvre pour venir en aide au nombre croissant de personnes souffrant de troubles mentaux grâce à ces fonds. Chaque personne laissée pour compte en est déjà une de trop. »

Le nombre d’applications et de logiciels qui utilisent l’apprentissage machine est actuellement en forte croissance. Dans les prochaines années, l’apprentissage machine pourrait, par exemple, permettre de diagnostiquer un cancer du sein plus rapidement et plus précisément, d’analyser des textes pour extraire les informations importantes, de déterminer le ton d’un texte (positif, négatif, etc), d’analyser le ton de voix d’un individu parlant au téléphone avec un centre d’appels et bien plus encore. Un des objectifs de l’apprentissage machine, à long terme, est d’optimiser les systèmes autour de nous en analysant un très grand nombre de données et en identifiant les meilleures solutions. En bref, le monde réel est complexe et désordonné, mais l’apprentissage machine pourrait nous permettre d’améliorer et de transformer les systèmes autour de nous et ce, à très grande échelle.

Enthusiasm: Films of Love, Labour and Longing ist das Ergebnis einer über zweijährigen Recherche der KünstlerInnen zu Filmen der polnischen Amateurfilmbewegung von den 50ern bis Mitte der achtziger Jahre. Zu Zeiten des Sozialismus wurde "Freizeit" in Polen in erster Linie durch betriebsfinanzierte Clubs und Vereine organisiert, zu den populärsten dieser Einrichtungen gehörten jene zur Produktion von 16 mm-Filmen. Die Ausstellung untersucht, wie solche Amateurprojekte zu einem Zufluchtsort für Marginalisiertes werden - für Träume von Glück, Liebe und Freiheit. Außerhalb der "offiziellen" Kultur entsteht so in den Amateurproduktionen eine kreative Gegenkultur, die ihre eigenen Elemente von Kritik und taktischem Widerstand formuliert. Die Mitglieder der Filmclubs kehren dabei das übliche Verständnis von Arbeit und Freizeit um und entwickeln eine wirkliche Produktivität erst in der Verfolgung ihrer eigenen Leidenschaften.

Mit ausgezeichneter Qualität und verbesserten Pianomodellen wurde der gute Klang des Namens Sauter in ganz Deutschland bekannt. Hans Sauter, Carl Sauters Sohn, der den Betrieb ab 1948 führte, machte neue Erkenntnisse der Wissenschaft, neue Techniken und Materialien für einen zeitgemäßen Pianobau nutzbar. Bald wurden die klang- und formschönen Modelle weltweit exportiert. 1968 übernimmt Carl Sauter III (Bruder von Hans Sauter) die Geschäftsführung des florierenden Unternehmens und errichtet ab 1974 bis 1983 ein neues Fabrikgebäude. Mit der Entwicklung der Doppelrepetitionsmechanik – sie ermöglicht beim Klavier einen besonders feinfühligen Anschlag – und der Neueinführung der hochwertigen M-Line Anfang der 90er Jahre verfolgte SAUTER diese Ausrichtung konsequent weiter.
