Since 2008, when Canada and Chile signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation for the Sustainable Development of Minerals and Metals, the Department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) have been working together with the Chilean Ministry of Mining to pursue concrete actions in each of the priority areas: promoting responsible mineral development policies; science and technology exchange; facilitating opportunities for increased stakeholder engagement from both countries; and trade, social and environment issues of mutual interest. Thematic priorities include: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); Junior Equity Financing for Exploration; Development of Mining Cluster; and Commodity and Industry Analysis. Achievements to date include: a CSR best practices workshop; publication of a Mining Tool Kit to assist communities and industry in developing constructive dialogue; a report by the Chile-Canada Chamber of Commerce on CSR activities of Canadian companies in Chile; training workshops focused on stock exchange equity financing in the mining sector; technology transfer of Canadian expertise in mine site reclamation, mine water management, orphaned and abandoned mines, technical assistance to assist in the modernization of Chile's Research Centre for Mining and Metallurgy, creation by the Chilean government of the Fenix Fund, a mining exploration development fund; and creation of a pilot mining cluster in Chile inspired by similar clusters in Canada. Canada and Chile have also increased collaboration in the energy, geomatics and forestry sectors.
