The cow as climate killer? Quite the opposite as Anita Idel, vet and mediator, demonstrated in her presentation. It is certainly true that greenhouse gas emissions from beef production are extremely high because farmers use intensive feeding systems and large quantities of fertiliser in the production of feed. However, there are also meat and milk production systems that are kinder on the climate, i.e. the grass-based methods that have traditionally been used for millennia but which are increasingly being superseded by intensive livestock farming.

Die Klimagasemissionen aus der Rindfleischproduktion seien durch die intensive Fütterung und den hohen Düngereinsatz in der Futterproduktion extrem hoch. Es ginge jedoch auch klimafreundlicher und zwar mit graslandbasierter Fleisch- und Milchwirtschaft, wie sie seit Jahrtausenden Tradition sei, jedoch mehr und mehr durch eine industrialisierte Massentierhaltung verdrängt werde.
