The objectives of the Directive include the prevention of packaging waste by limiting the packaging volume and weight as well as substance restrictions of certain hazardous and noxious substances. For example, packages with weight concentrations above 100 ppm of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium are prohibited. Other requirements that are placed on packaging in the Packaging Directive include, reuse and material, energy, and bioavailability.

On 03.01.2013 the EC Directive 2002/95/EC the restriction of use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment was superseded by the EC Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS Recast/ RoHS 2). Similar to the first version of the Directive, RoHS 2 asks manufacturers, distributors and importers to adhere to specified electrical appliances EU substance restrictions. These restrictions relate to the use of substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE.
