Castle is on high ground with access from visitor centre via timber road bridge and steep concrete ramp and steps. Wheelchairs restricted to visitor centre only. Buggy access difficult.

L shaped building 140’ x 35’ and 120’ x 40’. The accessible part of the monument is via a slatted wooden walkway around the edge of the building (5’ wide). One entrance (7’w x 7’h) plus three emergency exists, 8 windows, plus 2 long banks of windows at either end of the building.

If you think modern doors are long lasting, think again. Chepstow boasts the oldest castle doors in Europe. All wood and all of 800 years old. Until 1962 these doors hung in the main gateway, but are now in safe keeping in the on-site display. Let’s just say it would be nigh on impossible to find a replacement.

Access to the monument is down a tarmaced cul-de-sac from Castle Square lane. The path to the shop is sloping. The path from there to the gatehouse, over a wooden bridge, is level. The castle grounds are part level and part sloping with both grass and firm paths. Access to the towers and ditch is restricted to walkers only.

The site is accessible however visitors will need to be aware of a number of areas within the site including a steep driveway leading to the monument followed by a steep wooden drawbridge (handrail attached). The main pitched stone courtyard is relatively flat with sloping edges around on side. The internal rooms within the monument are accessed by stone staircases of which two thirds are very narrow (most with handrails provided).

A 19th century composite wreck built of wood with copper sheathing, but with iron strengthening to the frame, with two large water tanks. The recently discovered ship (close to the Tal y Bont wreck) is unexcavated, so her cargo and form and even her identity is uncertain. Survey and research into this vessel is being undertaken.
