Quoique la qualité des effluents et de l’eau dans la baie soit un problème, un plan est en vigueur pour appliquer des Pratiques de gestion optimales ainsi que la technologie de traitement FAD dans l’usine de transformation des fruits de mer. Les systèmes FAD sont reconnus pour leur forte capacité de réduire la DBO, le TSS, les MG, en plus de réduire, jusqu’à un certain point, l’azote (N), le phosphore (P) et autres nutriments dissous.

While effluent and water quality in the bay are a concern, there is a plan in place to implement Best Management Practices along with DAF Treatment technology at the seafood processing plant. DAF systems are known to significantly reduce BOD, TSS, FOG and reduce Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and other dissolved nutrients to a lesser extent. However, the existing contaminated sediments in the harbour will persist as a chronic problem without a remediation strategy or framework (Boult and Rebbeck, 1999). The available, albeit limited, sediment data for the bay, shown in Tables 1 and 2, indicates that the sediments are saturated with nutrients and organic matter. These nutrients, in conjunction with marine algae, have formed an anoxic boundary layer, as demonstrated by the high sulphide (H2S) levels and negative reduction oxidation (redox) potential over the bottom of the bay (Roy
