Cette salle d'irradiation de 30 mètres dotée d'un irradiateur à dose variable au cobalt 60 est utilisée pour effectuer des irradiations à faisceau γ en milieu ouvert ou pour irradier des cellules dans des incubateurs au CO2 et des animaux en cage. La longueur unique de cette salle d'irradiation permet d'appliquer une vaste gamme de doses faibles avec divers débits de dose.

The BRF houses the Gamma Beam 150C Irradiation Facility (GB-150C). This 30 meter irradiation hall with a variable dose rate cobalt 60 irradiator is used for open beam γ-irradiation as well as irradiating cells in CO2 incubators and animals in cages. The unique length of the irradiation hall makes it possible to deliver a wide range of low doses of radiation at a variety of dose rates. The gamma irradiator currently operates with a Co-60 source with a total activity of 6.5 x 1011 Bq. Dose rates range from 0.003017 mGy/min to 10 mGy/min.

Narayana (Prasad) Gubbala for his CANDU® chemistry knowledge to conceive a novel approach of reducing the historic high level of uranium contained within the NRU moderator system. This resulted in a 50 per cent reduction in radiation fields and is of significant benefit to the continued safe operation of NRU as it results in lower worker radiation doses and potential releases to the environment. Prasad was also invited to submit a paper on this at the Canadian Nuclear Society’s 9th Intermediate Conference on CANDU Maintenance that was held in 2011 December.

A unique feature of the GC60 facility allows instruments, material samples and specimens of any type of material in need of testing to be irradiated with accurate doses. The beam calibrator consists of four pneumatically operated shielded sources, a beam collimator to define and limit the extent of the useful beam, a linear positioning track, an interlock system and a control panel. With the two irradiators in the GC60, several different irradiation energies (gamma and X-ray) are available; doses can be further controlled using a remotely operated, computer-controlled positioning system.

AECL’s Biological Research Facility (BRF) plays a key role in proving and improving the standards for radiation safety and worker protection across the nuclear industry. The BRF conducts radiological research using live biological specimens and cell cultures. Studies involve examining the biosolubility and metabolism of various radioisotopes, including alpha-emitters, relative toxicity of various types of radiation and effects of low dose ionizing radiation through the measurement of DNA damage and repair, chromosomal inversions and immune response.

This new tool allows operators to rank individual fuel channels and make comparisons with other plant components such as feeders and steam generators. It has also led to improved operational safety and reduced the duration of outages by several days resulting in reduced radiation doses, and millions of dollars in savings for our customers.
