Culinary arts, which is the rising trend of the recent years raises chefs and managers with diploma in the 4-year undergraduate education program at İzmir University of Economics. In order to receive education in the department that will receive the third term students this year, one has to have taken 2010 OSS exam and received 140.000 or more in any branch of YGS. The university candidates who have been placed to any department by OSYM can also apply for “Department of Culinary Arts and Management".

Following that the first of the two-step exam will be conducted on July 27. After the written exam, students will be interviewed on July 28-29. The results will be announced on July 30, and registrations will take place on August 4-5. 50 students will be admitted to the department where young chefs will learn about the finest details on Turkish and world cuisine. 5 out of 50 of these students will have full; another 10 will have 25% scholarships.

Şener, alan dışı tercih halinde ise okulunu 5 ortalama ile bitiren bir öğrenci için eski sistemde 50 puanlık bir fark söz konusu iken şimdi bu farkın sadece 10 puana düştüğünü söyledi. Şener, öğrencinin mezuniyet notunun 3 olması durumunda ise alan dışı tercihinde puan kaybının daha da azalarak sadece 6 gibi bir rakama düştüğünü belirterek, “Bu sadece 3 - 4 soruyla kapatılabilecek bir fark. Ancak alan dışı tercih yapabilmek için ikinci sınavda her iki alanda da sınava girmek gerekiyor ki bu da öğrenciye büyük bir yük bindirmekte. Yani kolaylaştırılmış gibi görünse de yeni sistem herkese alan dışının kapılarını açmıyor. Gerçekten alanı dışında okumak isteyeni buna teşvik ediyor” diye anlattı.

Şener said that if a student wanted to make preference other than his/her own field, s/he had to solve the questions of the both in the second examination.. He said, “It is a burden for the student. Although it seems that the new system makes it easier, in fact it does not let everyone make preference other than his/her own field. It only encourages the students who want to make preference other than their own field."

Şener advised the students to prefer the department that they want to study at, and said, “The most common mistake is to write the departments that have the highest point to the top even though the student do not want to study at that department. You will choose the profession which you want most.” Cihat Şener stated that there are students who are uncertain about state and foundation universities, and said, “There are foundation universities which have a well qualified academic staff, and that teaches computer and two foreign languages. The students who are educated at these universities and have a brilliant career prove this.”

Difficulties such as; price alteration, speculations, inflation were awaiting the students. Eğer öğrenci başarısız bir dönem geçirmiş ise bu başarısızlığın kaynağını birlikte bulmaya çalışılmalı. ‘Koşulsuz sevgi’ her çocuğun ailesinden almaya ihtiyacını duyduğu sevgi türüdür. Ve eğer onlara notları ve onlara duyduğunuz sevginin bağlantılı olduğunu hissettirirseniz onların kaygılarını daha da arttırabilirsiniz. If the student is stressed about too many subjects to study and don’t know how to prioritize, parents should help by telling them to focus on the most important sections. If the student had an unsuccessful semester, parents should try to understand the reason behind it together with their children. ‘Unconditional love’ is the type of love every child expects from their parents. If you make your child think that your love is dependent on your child’s grades, you further increase the child’s worries. Making the child think that he/she will not be able to succeed in the next semester only damages their self-confidence. Reacting negatively to a report card might be a wrong method even if it was meant for the good of the child. Therefore, if a mild study schedule is blended with family time, the holiday would be blessed.”

Prospective students will be informed about 8 faculties, 35 undergraduate and 20 associate programs within the University in addition to vocational schools and, “Fashion and Textile Design” and “Culinary Arts and Management” departments that admit students through aptitude tests. Students, who feel unsure about which path they want to follow, will be guided in making the right decisions about their future careers. They will also be briefed about USA-SUNY (State University of New York) dual diploma programs, ERASMUS student Exchange programs with 120 universities abroad, and academic collaborations with 27 universities.

Dr. Alankuş, felç geçiren hastaların tedavisine yönelik bir proje üzerine yöneldiğini belirterek, “Felç geçiren hastaların rehabilitasyon egzersizlerinin oyunla nasıl daha motive edici bir hale getirileceğinin yanıtını aradık. Hastaların her gün aynı egzersizi yüzlerce kez yapması gerekiyor. Böyle olunca fizyoterapistlerle çalışarak bilgisayar oyunu geliştirdik. Oyunda, uçan bir balon var. Hasta vücuduna takılan bir hareket sensörü sayesinde oyunu oynayabiliyor. Hasta kolunu kaldırdıkça oyundaki uçan balon yükselip alçalıyor. Hasta vücudunu yana yatırırsa balon da yana yatıyor ve puan kaybettiriyor. Hasta, ancak vücudunu düzgün tutarak kollarını yukarı-aşağı oynattığında ödüller kazanıyor. Böylece egzersizler daha düzgün yapılıyor” dedi.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Alankuş said that his project targeted patients who had stroke. “We’ve wondered how rehabilitation exercises would become more motivating for stroke patients. Patients have to repeat same moves for hundreds of times every day. This inspired us to work with physical therapists and develop a computer game. There is a flying balloon in the game and patients are able to play the game via a motion sensor attached to their bodies. As the patients lift up their arms, the balloon also goes up and down. If patients lay on their side, so does the balloon, causing patients to lose points. They can only earn points when they sit up straight and move their arms up and down, which allows them to do their exercises appropriately,” stated Alankuş.

“Türkiye, faizleri ABD’ye paralel artırarak sermayeyi ülke içinde tutacaktır. Bu durumda, faizler yükselir, tüketim ve yatırımlar azalır. Ekonomik büyüme yavaşlar. Borcunu döndürmek zorunda olan kamu ve özel firmalar daha ağır bir faiz yükünün altına girerler. Zaten Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Merkez Bankası, geçtiğimiz günlerde faiz koridorunun üst bandını 75 baz puan artırarak bunun sinyallerini piyasalara verdi. Ancak şu andaki görünüm piyasaların Merkez Bankası’nın bu kararından yeterince tatmin olmadığı yönündedir. Bu nedenle döviz kurları hala oynaklığını korumaktadır. O halde 2013 yılının ikinci yarısında faiz oranlarının bir miktar daha artmasını, büyüme hızının yavaşlamasını yaşayacağız. 2014 yılındaki seçimler nedeniyle hükümet harcamalarının artmasını ve hükümet bütçesinin hem harcamalar arttığı için hem de artan borçlanma maliyetleri nedeniyle bir miktar bozulmasını beklemek yanlış olmaz.”

“Turkey would increase the interests in parallel to USA and keep the capital within the country. This will cause interests to increase, and consumption and investments will decrease. Economic growth will slow down. Public and private institutions in debt may have to deal with heavy burden of interest. Turkish Central Bank already gave the signal for this by increasing the upper band of interest rate corridor by 75 points. However, it looks as though the markets are not satisfied with this decision of the Central Bank. Therefore, the currency exchanges still maintain their instability. In that case, we will experience a slight increase in interest rates, and slowing down of growth rate in the second half of 2013. It will not be wrong to say that the government expenses will increase due to the elections in 2014, and the government budget will corrupt slightly due to both the increase of the expenses and the debt costs.”

Elifnur Uysal, top student of the University who graduated from Department of Translation and Interpretation, attached a star on the commemorative symbolic log with Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, and IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Can Muğan. Alkım Ecem Ünal (top student of Department of Industrial Engineering) and Aysu Yücel (top student of Department of International Trade and Finance), respectively the second highest and third highest ranking students, were also presented their diplomas and plaques by Demirtaş and Prof. Dr. Muğan. The top three students, Uysal, Ünal, and Yücel graduated with a GPA of 4.0.

Doç. Dr. Alankuş, hareket algılayıcılar sayesinde hastanın yanlış hareket yaptığında sistemin uyarı verdiğini, oyunda puan kaybettiğini söyledi. Oyunda hasta hareket ettiği sürece balonların yükseldiğini, engellerin bulunduğunu bunun yine hareketlerle aşıldığını anlatan Alankuş, “Amacımız hastanın hareketlerini düzgün şekilde yapmasıdır. Şimdi çalışmamızda bir adım daha ileri giderek, TÜBİTAK projesi geliştirdik. 2 yıl sürecek projemiz kapsamında İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi Psikoloji Bölümü ile birlikte çalışacağız. Psikoloji Bölümü’nden Prof. Dr. Hakan Çetinkaya ve Doç. Dr. Seda Dural ile birlikte yazılımı geliştireceğiz. Psikoloji Bölümümüzdeki beyin görüntüleme cihazını kullanarak, bu öğrenmeler beyinde gerçekleşiyor mu, hangi ölçüde gerçekleşiyor araştıracağız” diye konuştu.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Alankuş indicated that a noticeable progress was achieved as a result of a patient playing the game for one hour every day for 6 weeks and he said that the system, thanks to motion detectors, warned the patient in the event of a wrong move, and the patient lost points. She said that balloons in the game went up as the patients moved and the barriers in the game also were overcome through movements. Alankuş said, “Our goal is to make the patients do their exercises correctly. We’ve reached another step in our study and developed a TUBITAK project. We will be co-working with IUE Department of Psychology in this project that will last for 2 years. We will be developing software with Prof. Dr. Hakan Çetinkaya and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seda Dural of Department of Psychology. We will use the brain imaging equipment in Department of Psychology to understand whether this learning takes place in the brain and to what extent it happens.”

Seminerde üniversite adayları kadar ailelere de tavsiyelerde bulunan Gültekin, “Öğrenciler bırakın hayallerinin peşinden gitsin. Bu kararı anne-babalar vermemeli. Tercihlerinde elbette ki yol gösterici olun ancak bırakın tercihi çocuklarınız kendileri yapsınlar. Üniversite adayları ise mutlaka hayallerindeki bölümü üst sıralara yazsınlar. Birkaç tercihinizi yüksek yapabilirsiniz. Tercihte sıra değil puan önemli. Düşük puanlı yerleri yazarken de hiç okumak istemediğiniz bölümleri hiç yazmamanızı tavsiye ediyorum” dedi.

Sadık Gültekin got together with the university candidates and their families in the Conference Hall and gave two seminars in the same day. After the seminar, Sadık Gültekin talked with the candidates one by one and shared his ideas about university preferences. Gültekin also gave some advices to the families of the university candidates and said, "Let the students go after their dreams. Parents should not give this decision. You will of course guide them in their preferences but let the children give their decision. University candidates should write the department in their dreams. You may make some preferences that are above your point. Not the order but your point is important in preference. And do not write the departments that you do not want to study at all.”

Our partner in this program is Scottish Qualifications Authority, (SQA). This institution has an important role in offering a standard and well-qualified education throughout Scotland. The qualifications determined by SQA, the levels and the certificates given are valid in both United Kingdom and EU countries. SQA is also a EUROPASS member. SQA implements qualification programs in various levels. The level that is implemented by İzmir University of Economics Vocational School is Higher National Diploma–HND program under Higher National Level-HNs heading. The most important features of the program is that it is the equivalent of Vocational School education in Turkey, there is chance to transfer to undergraduate programs in 3rd grade and the diploma is not only valid in Scotland and UK but also in all EU countries.”
