Zasnovana na istom fizikalnom principu kao i RBS, ERDA metoda koristi teže ione kao projektile a kao produkti se detektiraju lake jezgre iz uzorka koje su odbijene (u prednje kuteve) Ako su mete dovoljno tanke, ERDA se može izvoditi i u transmisijskoj geometriji. Kod debljih uzoraka meta naginje pod malim kutem u odnosu na upadni snop (kao što je prikazano na doljnjoj slici) da bi u prednjim kutevima mogli detektirati odbijene jezgre.
