Wie Astachow vermutet hatte, war das Raumschiff mit einem Gravitationsantrieb versehen. Seine Konstruktion ist noch unklar, man kann aber mit Bestimmtheit sagen, daß die Physiker ihre Vorstellungen von der Schwerkraft in vieler Hinsicht werden uberprufen mussen.

The outer covering of the space ship consisted of an alloy of titanium and beryllium. As distinct from the usual alloys, the entire casing was made of a single-crystal metal. Our metals consist, roughly speaking, of myriads of crystals. And although each of them is strong enough, they do not cohere very well. The future belongs to the single-crystal metal, which will have properties we still have to discover. Moreover, by mastering the systems of crystallization, man will be able to govern its optical properties, durability and heat conductivity at will.

He hablado hasta aqui de los descubrimientos biologicos. Pero los hallazgos de los ingenieros seran, tal vez, mas importantes aun. Como presumiera Astajov, la nave cosmica iba provista de un motor de gravitacion. Su sistema no esta claro aun. Pero se puede asegurar que los fisicos habran de revisar a fondo sus concepciones sobre la naturaleza de la gravedad. Tras la epoca de los propulsores atomicos vendra, probablemente, la de los propulsores de gravitacion, en la que se obtendran energias y velocidades aun mayores.
