The community fishing stage building in Portugal Cove South stands out from its neighbours along the eastern Newfoundland Coast. Five 1.25 m by 2.5 m paintings depicting typical scenes of the early 20th century grace its walls. "They look like windows to the past," explains Charlene Power, Secretary of the Harbour Authority of Portugal Cove South. Created by Nora Coombs in 2000 as a job creation project, the paintings bring a sense of pride to the small commuinity. They also attract tourists, up to 100 a day, curious to learn more about the life of Newfoundland fishers and their families. So, for myself, I can be here five or ten years and be looking at a management position or even assistant manager within a couple of years. I already have a lot of friends who are at that position right now, at 19 years old, assistant manager, 24, a manager. The list goes on. It's a very young industry. It's beautiful scenery. I mean, every morning you come out to work and you kind of just open your eyes and take a look around, the eagles are flying overhead, sometimes some whales are going passed. Growing up in Newfoundland, I grew up in a fishing family. The history of Newfoundland is so bound in the fishery and when, in the 1990s the downturn happened, Newfoundland was in dire straights economically. At that time, I was graduating from aquaculture and I looked at aquaculture as a means of conservation. We knew we had problems with the capture fishery, so what are we going to do? People still need to eat healthy food and people are directed to eat fish by their physicians. How do we produce that in an environmentally sustainable manner? Aquaculture, to me, was a fit. But, at that time, I had to leave Newfoundland to work in the aquaculture industry.

I think it's a fabulous product. We still want to survive on the wild stock because, traditionally, that's our own way of survival, that's our regular diet; we want to see those things to be protected too. I survive on it too. I harvest the wild stock when an opportunity is there and I want that protected, but I also want to see us move forward.
