Sicherheitsfragen: US-Bürger fürchten Pannen, Russen Unfälle
Safety issues: US citizens dread breakdowns, and the Russians, accidents

Germany is much more sensitive when it comes to fears of inflation. Despite a moderate rate of inflation in 2012, Germans are almost as concerned about rising prices as Russians, who have actually been enduring considerable purchasing power declines for many years now.

A small consolation for Russians is that they, at any rate, appear to have fewer worries when it comes to speed cameras or speed limits. They are a nuisance for many of those polled in Germany, in particular, with 17% of Germans worrying about radar traps or speed limits. The Americans have the least difficulty with road conditions. No matter whether we are talking parking spaces, traffic jams or increasingly complex road layouts, US motorists are the least concerned about these topics.

Russian respondents were similarly reticent in expressing trust in their economy, with none of the surveyed economic areas achieving a value over 65%: the average overall rating is 53%, the same as in Italy. By comparison, Russians were primarily less trusting of banks, retail, drug manufacturers and airlines. Considering the airline disasters which seem to happen with horrifying frequency in Russia, trust for this industry among Russian respondents was less than 50%. Russians were even skeptical toward trades which are so beloved everywhere else. While this industry did achieve second place in the rankings for Russians, at 60%, agreement was below-average in comparison with other countries. Russians place their trust in manufacturers of (primarily imported) consumer electronics and household appliances. More than two in three respondents expressed their trust in this industry.

Chinese respondents are as concerned about infrastructure and road conditions as they are relaxed about the subject of costs. In China, the annoying search for a parking space throws one in four off balance, while one in five is sometimes concerned about the difficult road layout. In neighboring Russia, an aspiring car nation, like China, they at least share the worry about the shortage of parking spaces, and this is a sticking point for 24% of Russian drivers. However, they regard the biggest challenge as the road itself and for 42% of Russians, being stuck in traffic is a topic that ranks as a worry. Seemingly, road planners have not quite managed to keep up with the rapidly growing volume of traffic in the country, leading to an almost 200 kilometer-long mega traffic jam between Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2012.

Which issues are currently considered to be particularly pressing varies from country to country. For example, Spain was by far the most worried about the subject of unemployment, with almost 80% of the population showing concern. This is well founded, given that unemployment in the second quarter of 2012 was more than 24% in Spain. In no other EU country are more people jobless at present. In contrast, French and Russians are most concerned about rising prices, with almost one in three considering it important to take action against this problem. This is linked closely to the issues of rent and a difficult housing market, about which France and Russia are also most concerned, with one in five putting this on their list. Italians and Spaniards, in particular, are worrying about economic stability. Almost one in three consumers in these two countries mentioned this problem.

One in ten Europeans are now very well connected on the mobile and are consequently part of the “super-connected” group, which includes people for whom surfing and communicating using their mobiles is not only quite practical on occasions, but has actually become essential. These are the findings of the 2012 Consumption Trend Sensor for which the GfK Verein investigated mobile internet use in eight European countries and Russia in collaboration with the Technology/Consumer Experiences division. The “semi-connected” group is rather more pragmatic in its approach to the mobile web. This group is open to it and interested, but does not use it as much as the super-connected. In the survey countries, almost one quarter of the population over the age of 14 belonged to this group. The “pre-connected” spend the majority of their online time on laptops and PCs, although they do use mobile phones. The highest proportion across the nine countries are the “non-connected”, with mobile surfing not yet on the radar for 39% of Europeans and Russians.
