The interest for abstraction among contemporary young artists is expressed through different means. An artist like Marte Johnslien has explored abstraction’s significance in our time. She is preoccupied with how great challenges linked to environmental problems, and a lopsided distribution of wealth – a situation that demands action – can be reconciled with an increasing interest in seeking introspection, towards mindfulness and meditation. In her artistic projects she explores points in common between different withdrawal strategies in our society, and looks into transmission and utility values in an artistic context. Other young artists look into the possibilities of abstraction within a variety of modes and techniques. Traditional expressions such as painting, sculpture and installation art have a strong presence, while we see how some artists expands the formats and examine abstraction’s possibilities in the meeting point between sound and image. Consequently, today we have a wide range of artistic expressions that work with a continuation of the opportunities of abstraction.
  LIGHTS ON - norsk samti...
Young Norwegian contemporary artists, most with an impressive academic education, seem more concerned with object-based rather than process-oriented art. Most work from post-conceptual premises and realize their artistic ideas through sculptures, architecture/installations, videos, sound works, photographs and paintings. Most artists in this exhibition work with a narrative pictorial language, often including text references and pictograms firmly rooted in everyday memories and popular culture. Some reflect over the appropriation of pictures, objects and art-historical references, others focus on perception and the physicality of objects. Another tendency is to explore the metaphysical and mystical realm. Yet in spite of the copious variety and forms of expression, in almost all the artist one finds a critical closeness to society and a will to create meaningful, socially relevant art.

Aurora Passero’s links to textile art traditions make it interesting to reflect on her production in relation to other young artists who largely work on the basis of an extended form of materiality. Several of them work with non-traditional textile materials as a foundation for paintings, or build up sculptural works based on pre-existing structures. Henrik Olai Kaarstein is one of those who experiment with use of materials and materiality. He paints on car mats, cardboard, sleeping bags and concrete blocks. The results are paintings and sculptures with an individual narrative connected to the materials used. Likewise we can talk of Tiril Hasselknippe’s molded sculptures, which are often based on existing structures, architectural elements, furniture, surfboards or disjointed fragments from the public space. Through her artistic project the objects’ original function slowly dissolves, and in its place abstracted forms arise, shaped by materials and process.
  Chinese Summer - Astrup...
The Chinese artists who emerged at the beginning of the new century highlight the tremendous creativity of those who are breaking new territory in international contemporary art. These artists tend to adhere to a tradition of post-conceptual art premised upon ideas and artistic concepts rather than materials or formal techniques. Their works are realised as installations, films, sculptures, photographs, computer graphics and paintings. Audiences are confronted with a variety of works that tell stories about universal topics of power and politics, identity, history, memory and nostalgia. Other works take on abstract notions like time, unpredictability, chance and illusion. Like the society in which they live, the artists are acutely aware of their place in history, and there is a profound intermingling of joyfulness and unadulterated aspiration with serious social and political questions.

While Sherrie Levine and Louise Lawler photograph existing artworks and interrogate the artwork’s position and how its value is established, Richard Prince goes to the advertisement and entertainment industry to find his motifs. One of his most noted works is Spiritual America, a picture that shows the adolescent actress Broke Shields in an erotically charged environment. There is an unmistakeable ironic relationship between the grownup, made-up face and the young body, moreover, the work created a scandal when Prince exhibited it for the first time in a little Manhattan gallery in 1983. Taken in connection with the making of a film ten years earlier, the picture was never intended for the public’s gaze. In the context of the artworld, and with a title borrowed from the well-known American photographer Alfred Stieglitz, the picture stands out as one of the most interesting examples of the significance of appropriation art as contemporary artistic expression.
  Imagine Brazil - Astrup...
'Imagine Brazil' is the fourth exhibition in the series focusing on a country's art scene. The Brazilian art history is well documented, especially the Brazilian modernism, such as Concrete, Neoconcrete and Tropicália movement, which developed independently but also in deep dialogue with modernist tendencies in Europe and North America. Artists such as Oscar Niemeyer, Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Pape and Ernesto Neto, are all part of the international modernist and artistic heritage and are all internationally recognized. In parallel with this great modernist tradition is also an explicit Brazilian conceptual art that was less dogmatic and structuralist than their counterparts in Europe and North America, but more open, more poetic, more politically engaged, as we can see in the works of Cildo Meireles and Vik Muniz.
In recent years, the western notion and language of art has become universal. This means that more and more people from all over the world are collecting contemporary art. However, despite the fact that we have seen an increasing number of art fairs and ‘visible collectors’ it has been difficult to get a full picture of the international art collecting scene. Since 2012 we have been able to consult an internet site called Larry’s List, which is based in Hong Kong and initiated by two young Germans Magnus Resch and Christoph Noe. The latest report from Larry’s List is based on twenty-five specialists in twenty different countries who have access to 27,000 sources concerning the art market and the private collector.
"When we got the invitation to show IMAGINE BRAZIL at the Tomio Ohtake Instituto in São Paulo, we thought it was important to bring the selection of works in the exhibition up to date. If we were to show works by emerging Brazilian artists in their own country, where the art scene is exceptionally dynamic, it was clear that we had to show new ones. Of course, we kept the same list of artists and the curatorial model, where the young artists, chosen by the curators, were asked to invite more established artists. However, there is an important modification due to the size of the exhibition space. In this version of the exhibition, we have not been able to include the Artist's Books exhibition within the exhibition."
  Vibeke Tandberg - Astr...
The works of the young Norwegian artist Vibeke Tandberg (b. 1967) focus largely upon her psychosocial relations with the world. She uses photography — often digitally manipulated — and film, in order to deal with themes such as identity and gendered roles, (female) beauty and its stereotypical reproduction in our culture, youthful dreams and ambitions of authority, all the while using herself as both subject and model.

I tillegg presenterer vi en generell oversikt over ”hvordan unge norske kunstnere overlever”: Ingrid Pettersen skriver om støtteordninger i forhold til unge norske samtidskunstnere, og Ida Sannes Hansen presenterer en oversikt over norsk samtidskunst og involverte kommersielle gallerier.
Based on an idea of presenting ‘the Norwegian art world’ in a larger context, we have also included a book project in the exhibition. The book shop ‘One for the Books’, curated by the artist Marte Johnslien, will present and sell ‘artist books’ and other Norwegian and international books. The selection is both by and about Norwegian contemporary artists.
  Uncertain States of Ame...
This art can be characterized as narrative and with a clear social and political consciousness. Yet one can also find a wide specter of themes and artistic ‘languages' in the exhibition, which, in addition to extensive multi-media installations, includes a video- and sculpture exhibition, together with a program of performances, a lecture series and an extensive catalogue.

Contemporary Chinese art has established itself in the international arena of art via certain key artists. In preparing this exhibition, three curators, Gunnar B. Kvaran, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julia Peyton-Jones, have delved into the growing Chinese art scene, and chosen young artists who represent the new generation of contemporary Chinese art. The exhibition presents a multiplicity of styles and expressions, and underscores the versatility and quality of today’s Chinese art.
In the Name of the Arti...
Museet ønsker med denne omfattende utstillingen, 'In the Name of the Artists', å vise et utvalg av arbeider som fokuserer på viktige etablerte, men fortsatt aktive, samtidskunstnere og et bredt spekter av unge, amerikanske kunstnere.
The museum wants this extensive exhibition, 'In the Name of the Artists - American Contemporary Art from the Astrup Fearnley Collection', to show a selection of works that focus on key established, contemporary artists who still are active and a wide range of young American artists. Several of the artists are represented with a number of works and have participated in the design of the parts of the exhibition showing their art. In that sense, the exhibition will include a number of smaller solo shows.
, curated by Maria Lind. The basis for her project was the renewed interest for abstraction, which has manifested itself since the late 1990s where young artists have both interpreted the legacy of the formal abstraction and created a social version of it. Another important tendency Lind has explored is abstraction in the form of economic processes, and the her last approach has been looking at how abstract systems often generate a certain logic that is transferable to recent political counter-reactions. http://eastsideprojects.org/past/abstract-possible

American artist Dan Colen is part of the art scene that has recently developed around New York’s Lower East Side. Informally known as the “Bowery School,” artists such as Colen, Nate Lowman, Aaron Young, Ryan McGinley, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Banks Violette, Dash Snow (who died in 2009), Agathe Snow, Hanna Liden, Lizzie Bougatsos and Adam McEwen share an engagement with the city they live in and with “sub-urban” culture in general.
  Børre Sæthre - My Priva...
In April, May and June a number of the museum's galleries will be filled with Børre Sæthre's elegant and surprising installations. Both internationally and here at home the young Sæthre has already made a name for himself as a creator of total environments that are psychologically disquieting and at the same time aesthetically extremely well designed and stylistically carried out. Environments that set in motion reactions and reflections.

After Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art first directed its attention towards up and coming American artists, through the exhibition ‘Uncertain States of America’ (2005), and this last autumn devoted an exhibition to some of the youngest Chinese contemporary artists, the time has come to look at things closer to home and to put together a presentation of Norwegian contemporary art.

Cao Fei (b. 1978) is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary artists from mainland China, whose surprising and inviting works are exhibited in museums and galleries across the world. Her distinct visual imagery, typically full of theatrical effects, suggests an active observation of the relationship between the individual and the “system.”
