If you don't yet know who is Mark Kalev Kostabi, then probably you don't know anything about contemporary art, well at least according to the gospel of Kostabi . Belonging to the elite of 1980's East Village art circuit, Kostabi, a descendant of Estonian emigrants, gained scandalous prominence by claiming that art equals commodity. To prove his point Kostabi launched his art factory, Kostabi World, where up and coming artists produced paintings with a 5 dollar per hour salary, which Kostabi then sold as his own...with an immense profit margin of course. However, at some point the kettle started to boil over as Kostabi's friends and clients didn't grasp where the line between irony and seriousness was drawn. Michael Sladek's energetically paced and humor filled documentary takes us into the glorious world of Mark Kalev Kostabi 20 years later taking the hold of the audience already during the first minutes. Though it seems that Kostabi's star isn't shining too brightly in the US, the genius still has a firm grasp over his horses. New markets are to be conquered in Italy, as who can refuse an order for a golden statue of Pope decorated with miniature pigeons, and his weekly talk show "Title This" where celebrities compete for cash in the game of providing titles for Kostabi's paintings needs its master of ceremony. The film communicates at all levels that that Kostabi is still a true con artists- come rain and shine, the game for Kostabi and his World is always on! Sten Saluveer
