  Parapara Inlet – Tapa w...
The tradition of a man-eating taniwha at Parapara Inlet, Golden Bay appears to have been transferred almost wholesale from the island of Taha‘a in Tahiti. According to the tradition, a taniwha named ‘Aifa‘arua‘i (New Zealand’s Kaiwhakaruaki) terrorised people travelling between Parapara, Taha‘a (Tākaka in New Zealand) and Motue‘a (Motueka).
  The story of Kaiwhakaru...
More important is the story’s historical significance. It is a local version of the legend of the Polynesian monster ’Aifa’arua’i, the scourge of voyagers between the Pacific islands of Parapara, Ta’a’a, Motue’a and Ara’ura.
I tua atu, he nui tēnei kōrero. Kei ngā moutere o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa te kōrero mō ‘Aifa’arua’i’, te taniwha patu i ngā tāngata haere i ngā moutere o Parapara, o Ta’a’a, o Motue’a, o Ara’ura. I tīkina aua kōrero ki tāwāhi, ka whakanōhia ki tēnei takiwā, inarā kei te whakahuatia tonutia aua ingoa ki Te Tai Poutini i ēnei rā tonu – a Parapara, a Tākaka, a Motueka me Arahura.
