collection and produced according to traditional techniques. This aptly-named collection, created by Philippa Thorne, seems to be telling the lives of mother of seven Siphiwe Mngometulu, of her own mother Gogo and her daughter Bonakele, who weave the baskets in Swaziland using natural fibres and recycled materials to create objects of awe-inspiring beauty and power. “As we work, we braid the strands together, just as our mothers and grandmothers have done before us. Inspired by the past and created in the present, with the constant evolution of life, we weave together the elements, creating new patterns and new possibilities.” Since 2006, like Siphiwe and her family, almost 750 female weavers in Swaziland have worked as part of the Gone Rural project, which has set itself the task of defending local craftsmanship and applying a sustainable development model to improve the living conditions of women in rural Africa.
