From an official list drawn up by the Lombardy-Veneto land-register in 1844, it appears that the Venetian islands then numbered sixty-two. Today there are an even larger number surviving, even if it is stretching the term to call some of them ‘islands’. The two Crovato brothers, Giorgio, an historian, and Maurizio, a journalist with the RAI, explain the history and development of the islands in the Lagoon and their subsequent decline, apart from the still inhabited islands of Murano, Burano, Torcello and San Servolo. Since the original publication of the book several of the abandoned islands have been restored and these islands will be discussed. Gianluca Bisol, general manager and member of the celebrated Prosecco-producing family, will illustrate Bisol’s particular contribution towards the preservation of the Lagoon. The talk will be held in Italian and English, with translations by Christopher Wayman and John Francis Phillimore from the San Marco Press. Aperitivo with Award Winning CREDE, Finest Prosecco from Valdobbiadene, kindly offered by BISOL www.bisol.it
