Unos inmuebles construidos en altura se aprietan, agrupados sobre una colina para protegerse mejor de las aguas. Surgidas del desierto, 500 casas de tierra cruda, con techumbre blanca para resguardarse también del cielo, se ensanchan hacia la base, recubierta ésta de la misma capa blanca impermeable.

The high buildings are tightly grouped on the hillock to provide better protection against floods. Rising out of the desert, 500 houses of earthern architecture, are crowned in white to protect themselves from the sky. They widen at the base, which is also covered in an impermeable white render. Mashrabiyas and doors in wood, sometimes as old as the 12th century, decorate the narrow, closed facades of five to nine storeys. This fascinating architectural ensemble dates, for the most part, to the 16th century. It houses 7,000 inhabitants who share five mosques, one of which was constructed in the 8th century.

Des immeubles en hauteur se serrent, regroupées sur un tertre pour mieux se protéger des eaux. Surgies du désert, 500 maisons de terre crue, couronnées de blanc pour se protéger aussi du ciel, s'élargissent vers la base elle-même recouverte du même enduit blanc imperméable. Moucharabiehs et portes de bois quelquefois très vieilles (XIIe s.) ornent ces façades, de cinq à neuf étages, étroites et fermées. L'ensemble architectural étonnant, remontant pour l'essentiel au XVIe siècle et abritant 7 000 habitants, s'ouvre sur cinq mosquées dont l'une remonte au VIIIe siècle.
