Mochima National Park is located between the two centers of urban, industrial, fishery, and tourist development in eastern Venezuela: the cities of Cumaná (212,432 inhabitants) in the State of Sucre , and Barcelona (222,000 inhabitants) and Puerto La Cruz (70,000 inhabitants) in the State of Anzoátegui. After oil related activities started in Anzoátegui and Monagas, this region saw the most urban and industrial growth (Técnica Ambiental 2002). An important part of the only roadway that connects the central and eastern regions of the country goes through the park's continental zone. A presidential decree, consistent with regional development plans, has existed since 1976 to convert this roadway into a modern highway (V Plan de La Nación 1976).

There are several access roads into the biotope. The most commonly used road runs from the community of el Cruce a Dos Aguadas, located on the outskirts of the southwestern section of the protected area. The dirt road is hard to travel during the rainy season because the area is marshy and is usually flooded. From the southwestern edge of El Zotz to the administrative center, an 18 km trail runs from highly degraded areas to largely intact forest. Another access route is from the north, along a dirt road that runs from the community of Uaxactún. There is a 20 km trail from the northern limit to the administrative center. This trail passes through high quality forest. This is actually part of the same road that crosses the biotope from southwest to north, and which is dubbed the Camino Real, or "Royal Way."

Although the plan does not include the biotope, it would certainly endanger the integrity of its ecosystems. The old, main Carora-Barquisimeto highway crosses the park in several sectors. The Chocón Machacas Protected Biotope is located in eastern Guatemala, in the municipality of Livingston, department of Izabal. The name stems from a river that flows through the central area of the biotope. The southern zone of the biotope is within Río Dulce ("Sweet River") National Park's boundaries (CEMEC/CONAP, 2001), which is a protected area in itself. The northern sector is bordered by agricultural and cattle farms; Río Dulce is the southern boundary; the Cáliz community and the national park are the natural boundaries to the East, and the Ciénega river is the western boundary. Although the area is not vast, the fact that it shares the complex water system of the Río Dulce National Park is pivotal to the many species it harbors. La empresa forestal MADECSA, propiedad del congresista de la república Jaime Velásquez, está prosiguiendo con la construcción de esta carretera básicamente para extraer madera de las comunidades nativas por las que cruza, a pesar de existir oposición local.

There was a forest contract within the protected area. This contract had existed previous to the area’s recategorization. However, it had been erroneously granted, because the forest concession overlapped reserved zone territory. This allowed the ALCERSA company to log in the native communities and the reserved zone. To make this possible, the company constructed a highway that crosses the Pangoa and Ene Rivers going towards the communal reserve and Otishi Naitonal Park. Seeing the possibility of a suspended contract, ALSERSA went to court against the State and INRENA, but ended up losing the judgment because they did not present a good defense. Finally, under pressure of a possible scandal, the company decided to leave, but did not rule out the possibility of returning to the area.

El paisaje es ondulado, con una pequeña serranía que cruza el biotopo en sentido suroeste a noreste y se extiende por el norte hasta el Biotopo Dos Lagunas y el bloque de Río Azul del Parque Nacional el Mirador-Río Azul.

The landscape is one of rolling hills that cross the biotope from southwest to northeast and run as far north as Dos Lagunas Biotope and the Río Azul block of El Mirador-Río Azul National Park. The hills reach a maximum height of 400 meters. To the east, near Tikal National Park, lie the lowlands, which reach an altitude of 150 meters (CEMEC/CONAP 2001; CECON 1999). The soil is Tertiary Era sediment with marine-origin calcareous formations (CECON 1995; Oxlaj 1992). The temperatures range from 20-32° C, and the average annual temperature is 27° C (CECON, 1999). Annual precipitation varies from 1200-1400 mm. There are approximately four dry months, between January to April. Rivers do not flow throughout the year; when they dry up, remaining water pools in small ponds, which serve as vital resources for the local wildlife.

Estos canales fueron abandonados y bloqueados irrumpiendo el flujo que regulaba los niveles de agua. Hoy queda un canal principal, llamado canal Sangradero, que cruza los pantanos y llega hasta el mar pasando por el Country Club de Villa.

The old sewage system used several incoming canals that kept the marsh waters under control. The canals were abandoned and blocked, which interrupted the flow that regulated the water levels. At present there is only one main canal, called Sangradero, which crosses the marshes and flows through the Villa Country Club and into the sea. When the water levels were lower, the Country Club requested SERPAR to allow more water flow into their grounds, to maintain the golf course. Today, the water level has increased and in view of the many plots and houses that have flooded, the residents have requested the levels to be decreased. The flow of the Sangradero canal has increased, which has caused more water to flow through the Villa Country Club. This has translated into their automatic water pumps working overtime and therefore using more electric power, which in turn causes greater expenses.
